Holly Springs caught fire in the fourth Thursday night but it proved to be too late. The Hawks were eliminated in the Class 3A North State semi-finals, 62-57, by Leflore County. “We
were down by 10 with six minutes left, and to come back, we had to
shoot threes,” coach Naylond Hayes said. “And the threes were falling.” Particularly those launched by Courtavious Daughtery. He hit six of eight in the final period. “We were down three and had the ball twice, but couldn’t get over the hump,” Hayes said. Holly High trailed 21-17 at the half, in the game played at Booneville High School, and 35-26 following three periods. The Hawks scored 31 points in the fourth but they weren’t enough. “Overall,
we didn’t play well, but the reason why was Leflore County’s talent,”
he said. “They played man-to-man (defense) most of the night, and we
didn’t handle the pressure real well.” Daughtery finished with a game-high 26 points. Rodney Redmond and Paris Scruggs added 13 each. The Hawks had advanced to the quarter-final round with a 55-47 home win Tuesday, Feb. 14, over North Panola. “We played a pretty good game – about 85 percent of what we’re capable of playing,” Coach Hayes said. Holly High stormed to a 15-point lead after three periods. “In
the fourth quarter, we missed some assignments on defense and let them
get a couple of threes,” Hayes said. “But we held steady from there (to
win by by eight).” Redmond was the top gun for the Hawks. He scored 19. Tevin Jones had 10, Dewayne McKinney eight and DeAndre Griffin seven. Hayes completed his 12th season at the helm of the Hawks. This year’s team finished with a 19-12 record. “It was a good season – better than 12-19,” he said. “We improved and really exceeded expectations.” He loses five players – Redmond, Scruggs, Justin Jeffries, Jevon Isom and Dewayne McKinney.
