The Potts Camp Lady Cardinals scored 19 points through three quarters Thursday night. They netted 28 in the fourth. “But we couldn’t quite get there,” coach Tana Miller. They
dropped a 52-47 decision to John F. Kennedy in the Class 2A North State
semi-finals at New Site High School. The loss completed the Lady Cards’
season with a 17-16 record. They were down 17 points in the third quarter and four midway through the fourth. “I
think we were a little nervous getting off the bus,” said Miller, whose
team was making its first-ever appearance in the quarter-final round of
north half. “We looked like ourselves in the fourth quarter, but it was
too late.” Potts Camp shot 16.6 percent from the field in the first half and 46 percent in the second half. “We had the jitters to start with and then we settled down in the last eight minutes, but it wasn’t good enough,” she said. Leading scorers for the Lady Cardinals were Tenesha Woods with 21 and Zana Davis with 17. The Potts Camp girls moved to the north’s final eight, thanks to a 75-46 blowout of O’Bannon on Monday, Feb. 13, at home. The Lady Cardinals opened the game with a 14-0 run. “That got us into our game early, and we played our game for four quarters,” Coach Miller said. “O’Bannon was really quick, and that gave us some problems. But we put together a complete game.” Potts Camp was on top 36-22 at the halfway point. Four
Lady Cardinals scored in double figures – Zana Davis with 20, Hayley
Davis with 14, Woods with 13 and Jessica Peterson with 10. Potts Camp, with no seniors, had a strong finish to the season. “We were playing our best ball at the right time – an outstanding season,” she said. The
late-season run included second place in the the Region 2-2A
Tournament. The Lady Cards lost by one to Walnut, which is advancing to
state. “We’ve already set goals for next year,”
Miller said. “Now that we’ve been this far, I hope they realize this is
not good enough. We want to go to state.”
