Byhalia Lady Indians were keeping right up with their invited guests,
H.W. Byers, in this intra-county rival game January 31. They
were making the Lady Lions work for every rebound. They were holding
the usually speedy guard force in check. Byhalia wasn’t far behind

Rivalry • Lady Hawks, Hawks get ‘Senior Night’ wins By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor It was a double dose of round ball hype on “Senior Night” at Holly High with rival Byhalia as the invitee. Each
school was trying to make an early statement of authority in the girls’
game. Megan Crittle pulled up at the top of the key and blasted a trey.
She followed with a deuce on her next trip for a 5-0 lead. Full Story
Patriots 28-3 with playoffs awaiting By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Marshall Academy Patriots closed the regular season on a high note last week. The
number-one-ranked team in Class AA beat the fifth-ranked team in AAA,
the top-ranked one in A and the second-ranked squad in Class AA.
They’re 28-3 overall with the playoffs starting this week. Full Story

Indians sign scholarships
Two
Byhalia High School seniors will move on to play football at the
college level. Offensive tackle Jamal Danley (6’4” and 270 lbs.) signed
February 1 with Louisiana Monroe. Linebacker Carderious Dean (6’3” and
220 lbs.) signed with Itawamba Community College. In front, from left,

a baseball scholarship Friday, Feb. 3, with Mississippi Delta Community

Hardin going to Holmes
Eric
Hardin (5’11” and 150 lbs.), a senior defensive back at Holly Springs
High School, has declared his intentions to attend Holmes Community
College and play football for the Bulldogs. Pictured during the

Robison signs with Texas Tech
Chase
Robison, a senior defensive end at Christian Brothers High School in
Memphis, Tenn., signed a football scholarship February 1 with Texas
Tech University. Joining Robison (6”4” and 230 lbs.) for the ceremony
are (from left) his mother, Caroline Robison, Christian Brothers head
football coach Kevin Locastro and his father, Lanier Robison III. He is
the grandson of Carole Robison of Holly Springs and the late Lanier

Byhalia takes two from M.S. Palmer on ‘Senior Night’ By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor In their last home games before the district playoffs, the Byhalia teams picked up a pair of important wins at home. The
Lady Indians started strong on “Senior Night” against the M.S. Palmer
Lady Dragons, holding them to just six points in the first quarter
(21-6) and then leading them 41-16 at intermission. Full Story
Competitive team looks for players Coaches are
looking for baseball players who have at least one season of experience
to play on a competitive 7 and under coach pitch baseball team based in
the Holly Springs area. Full Story
 |  |  | A happy reunion at Marshall Academy
Marshall
Academy honored the 1971 overall championship basketball team during
special ceremonies January 27. In attendance, 41 years after their
outstanding season, were team members Robert Akins, Bobby Bonds, Mike
Boone, Larry Coley, Bob Dent, Stephen Fleming, Johnny Hill, Jimmy Lee
Hughes, Larry McAlexander, Tommy Rodgers, Chuck Rounsaville and Dr. Ben
Yarbrough. Billy Person was represented by his wife, Linda. Also
attending was their coach, Noal Akins, who headmaster Jane Hubbard said
“was the hit of the night.” Absent were players Jewell Johnson, George
Yarbrough and Mike Harrison. The late Gary Utley, who was a member of
the team, was also recognized. Utley’s daughter, Kada Stephenson, was
in attendance. Cheerleaders present for the reunion were Betty Bowie
Burch, Camille Jones Valentine, Lisa Lowry Marbry, Farrah Swaney
McAlexander and Vicki Little Waters. Cheerleaders absent were Jennifer
Hurdle Spiers, Jamie Mackie Jones and Jan Person Scott. Activities
included a reception in the cafeteria before the MA-Hickory Flat
basketball games, the unveiling of a championship banner at halftime
and a get-together after the games at the home of Bubba and Jane
Hubbard. |
