Police seize marijuana By SUE WATSON
Holly Springs police officers arrested two men last week and seized about seven pounds of marijuana from their vehicle, according to chief James Dean. The two suspects, who gave police Greenville addresses, were stopped during a routine traffic safety check on Chulahoma at the intersection of Cedar Hills and officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car, he said. Dean said officers believe the men made a buy out in the county and were intending to take the marijuana back to Greenville. Justice Court to go after fines By SUE WATSON About a half-million dollars on the books at Marshall County justice court may be collectible. Representatives of Mississippi Court Collections Inc., of Brandon, met with the board of supervisors recently to discuss how their business works to go after unpaid fines and fees owed the court. County looks at new lines By SUE WATSON With a new board of supervisors seated and the 2010 Census data in hand, Marshall County has been working to develop a plan that meets U.S. Department of Justice guidelines for reapportionment of supervisor districts and constable districts. The matter of timeliness and public information on how the process is being handled was brought up before the board recently by Regina Walker of supervisor District 5.
Byhalia Chamber event draws crowd By SUE WATSON
A group exceeding 100 attended the quarterly luncheon of the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce. The event was held at Seafood Junction Too in Byhalia. Mika Joyner, with Mika Joyner Community Mortgage, was recognized for her service of over three years as a chamber board member. Joyner Community Mortgage and Brantley Funeral Home sponsored the luncheon. Mock Trial team going to state After advancing in the district competition February 5 in Oxford, Marshall Academy’s Mock Trial teams are getting ready for the state competition in Jackson February 17-18. The school’s Team 1 placed and will compete against schools throughout the state, and Team 2 was chosen as the district’s alternate and will compete if another placing school cannot. Deputies make break-in, larceny arrests By SUE WATSON Three suspects were arrested in a scrap-metal grand larceny case and one juvenile was arrested and charged in the break-ins of two houses, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Model City initiative kicked off By SUE WATSON
A new concept of creating space for community members to talk about improving their neighborhoods and local economies is underway in Holly Springs. Assisting is Future America, a non-profit organization with offices in Washington, D.C.; Memphis, Tenn.; Atlanta, Ga; and Tulsa, Okla. The Model City Plan is being studied in Memphis and across Mississippi with emphasis on Holly Springs, according to Kilolo Ajanaku, national director of the Model Cities Initiative. The non-profit operates from private donations and volunteer leadership, she said. Marshall/Benton Job Fair needs employer signups By SUE WATSON
