 | Photos by Barry Burleson Honoring the late Frank Swords
Marshall
Academy held a special ceremony Friday night, prior to the varsity
basketball games versus Indianola Academy, in memory of Frank Swords.
(Top photo) Headmaster Tommy Gunn announces that, by a unanimous vote
of the school’s board of directors, the facility where the Lady
Patriots and Patriots play will be named “Frank Swords Gymnasium.” The
temporary sign is being held by Elizabeth Skelton and Megan Watkins.
Swords, who passed away in August of this year, was an avid supporter
of the school. “No one loved Marshall Academy more than Mr. Frank,”
Gunn said. Swords’ daughter, Leslie (above, right), thanked the school
for honoring her father and said she has fond memories of him attending
all the basketball games and even doing a little coaching from the
stands. Ki Jones, vice president of the school board, and Leslie Swords
also talked about the capital campaign underway at Marshall Academy in
honor of Frank Swords. The campaign, in its early stages, is
seeing tremendous results. Those interesting in contributing can call
the school, (662) 252-3449. The campaign is being led by Linda
McKinney, director of development and planned giving. “Education at
Marshall Academy is only 85 percent funded by tuition,” Jones said.
“Donations are vital to the school’s success.” Several other family
members of Frank Swords were in attendance for the dedication ceremony. |
