Bart Jenkins couldn’t be happier. Last
week the 32-year-old was named the head football coach at Marshall
Academy. He has been on staff the past two years as an assistant,
running the defense. He also worked at MA in 2002-03. “I’m
absolutely in love with Marshall Academy,” Jenkins said. “I love
everything about it – the kids, the teachers, the administrators – I’m
really glad this has worked out the way it has.” Jenkins is also the head baseball coach at MA and he will retain that position. Full Story

Lady Hawks down district foe Devils By Claude Vinson Sports Editor The Holly Springs Lady Hawks were all business when they came out against the Booneville Lady Devils Tuesday night, Jan. 24. They
took a 7-0 lead within the first three minutes of this Region 1-3A
contest. They were using a tight 2-3 defense. They gave the Lady Devils
all they could handle in the first quarter at 11-7. Full Story
MA-Hickory Flat split games By BARRY BURLESON Editor On
a night when an overall championship team from 41 years ago was
honored, the current Marshall Academy basketball team made a statement
as it seeks the same coveted prize. The private
school Patriots, with members of the special 1971 squad in the stands,
dominated public school Hickory Flat 79-40 to improve their record to
25-3. The defending Class AA state champions are ranked number one in

Johnson commits to Rebs A big Byhalia junior has already decided where he wants to play football after high school. Offensive
lineman Davion Johnson, who stands 6’5” and weighs 318 pounds, has
verbally committed to Ole Miss, according to Markeith Washington, head
coach of the Indians. The announcement was made Sunday.
Byers takes two from Falcons By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor Fur and feathers flew in yet another duel between a pair of district foes in the Lions’ den last Friday night. The
H.W. Byers Lady Lions were coming off of a win over non-district foe
but county rival Potts Camp the night before. However, this game versus
Ingomar had a different look from the opening. Alexis Hardaway was back
in the starting line-up and she sank the first basket for the Lady

County basketball summaries Holly Springs teams knock off Kossuth By BARRY BURLESON Editor Holly Springs teams visited Kossuth Friday night and left Alcorn County with a pair of nip-and-tuck wins. The Lady Hawks picked up their second straight win, both in Region 1-3A. They beat the Lady Aggies 39-38. Megan Crittle was the top gun with 13 points. KeShauna Payton had 10. Full Story
Free throw competition scheduled for Feb. 18 All
boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local
level of competition for the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw
Championship. The local competition will be held
on February 18 beginning at 11 a.m. at Holy Family School gymnasium on

BSA announces sign-up Byhalia Sports
Association will hold registration for spring and summer T-ball,
baseball, and softball on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 25,
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Byhalia Town Hall. Again
this year, there will be a special age group for 3- and 4-year-old
children. This is such a fun age group for both playing and watching.
We also have teams for girls ages 5-16 with a 5-6 girls’ softball team
and boys ages 5-15. Full Story
