54, of Lamar, died Nov. 14, 2012, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in
Southaven. She was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church. Services
were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 17 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial was in Clear Creek Cemetery. Bro. Jim Polk and Bro. Frank
Feathers officiated. She leaves her husband,
Charles J. Byrd; a son, Kevin Byrd (Rena) of Hickory Flat; two
daughters, Karen Benson (Jason) of Myrtle, Kelly Byrd of Lamar; two
brothers, Larry Thompson of Red Banks, Jerry Thompson of Lamar; a

Lillian Carpenter Christian, 82, died Nov. 13, 2012, at Trinity Mission
in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Elvis Christian. She worked for
Holiday Inn and The Natchez Trace for many years. Services
were held at 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of
W.E. Pegues Funeral Home. Burial was in Tupelo Memorial Park. She
leaves a son, James Eldon Christian (Teresa) of Georgetown, S.C.; a
daughter, Sylvia Papp of Lake Worth, Fla.; her brothers, John Paul
Carpenter (Phyllis) and Roy Carpenter of Holly Springs, Ronnie

Ann Howell Dowdy, 49, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 17, 2012. A 1981
graduate of Holly Springs High School, she was a cook and a member of
Ark of Safety Outreach Ministry. Services were
held at 12 noon, Nov. 17, at the Holy Family School gym. Burial was in
Hill Crest Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Williams officiated. Serenity Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves
her husband, Gregory Dowdy of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Michael
Raymel Howell, Elijah James Howell, both of Grenada; a brother, Jimmy
Lee Howell of Grenada; and two sisters, Catherine Howell Bridges (David
Sr.) of Grenada, Diane Brown of Ashland. Pallbearers
were Mitchell Young, Reginald Burke, Sean Blake, Carlos Miller, James
Young, Sean Evans, Shamone Miller and Kelvin Hannah. Josie Sims Freeman Josie
Sims Freeman, 80, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 14, 2012, at Baptist
Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was the widow of Lee Boyce Freeman.
She was a member of Harris Chapel CME Church in Wyatte, a member of
Retired Teachers Association, church secretary, Christian education
director, a church stewardess and retired educator with Tate County
School System. Services were held at 10 a.m. on
Nov. 20 at Yarbrough Chapel CME Church. Burial was in the church
cemetery. Rev. George R. Taylor officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She
leaves a daughter, Beryl D. Freeman of Holly Springs; a sister, Martha
B. Jones of Holly Springs; a brother, Robert Lee Sims of Holly Springs.
Nita S. Gilstrap Nita S.
Gilstrap, 79, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 16, 2012 at Germantown
Methodist Hospital. The widow of Robert Gilstrap, she was a member of
the First United Methodist Church and a retired bank teller. Co-founder
of the Bell, Book and Candle Gift Shop, she was owner of the Ben
Franklin store and owner and manager of White’s Auto, all in Holly
Springs. She was a member of the Methodist Women’s Club, Thursday Club,
Friends of the Library and the Birthday Club. Services
were held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the First United Methodist Church.
Rev. Milton Whatley officiated. Burial was Nov. 20 at Camp Methodist
Cemetery in Camp, Ark. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. She leaves a son, Frederick A.
DeBardeleben IV (Julia) of Byhalia; two daughters, Suzanne DeBardeleben
Dunlap of Holly Springs, Julie DeBardeleben (Barry Cohen) of
Germantown; stepsons, Brian Gilstrap, Robert Gilstrap; stepdaughters,
Veronica Cook, Peggy Huskey; and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers

Jean Guffey, 84, of Germantown, Tenn., died Nov. 15, 2012, at Methodist
Germantown Hospital. She was the widow of Calvin C. Guffey. She was a

Henry Holmes Sr., 78, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 14, 2012. He was a
laborer with Sand Paper company. He was the youngest and last of the 14
children of Ed and Lizzie Holmes. Services were
held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 16 at Clear Creek Baptist Church, where he was

was a member of the mother’s board, a church usher and a retired
factory worker. Services were held at 12 noon on

Jewel Smith, 75, of Waynesboro, Ga., died Nov. 13, 2012, at University
Hospital. She was the widow of Robert H. Smith. She was a native of
Holly Springs. She lived in the Augusta, Ga., area for 37 years and was
a retired cosmetologist. She served on the church committee and the
ladies auxiliary. Services were held at 3 p.m. on
Nov. 16 at Piney Grove Baptist Church in McBean, Ga., where she was a
member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Elliott Sons Funeral Home,
Augusta, was in charge of arrangements. She
leaves her son, David Smith (Donna) of Waynesboro; a sister, Lavern
Speaks of Warner Robins, Ga.; brothers Van Doyle Cook of New Albany,
Curtis Cook Jr. of Holly Springs; four grandchildren and four

Sweeden, 70, of Snow Lake, died Nov. 17, 2012 at Baptist DeSoto
Hospital in Southaven. The widow of LaVerne Sweeden, she was a member
of Bluff Springs Baptist Church. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bluff Springs Cemetery in Ashland. She
leaves two sons, Eddie Morgan of Cordova, Tenn., Duane Morgan of Snow
Lake; two daughters, Linda Johnson of Holly Springs, and Teresa
Castillo of Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Randy Hailey of Southaven,
Bill Hailey, Ray Hailey, both of Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Martha
Paradise of Somerville, Tenn., Dorothy Harden of Mt. Pleasant, Edna
Seals of Victoria; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Marle Freels. Ida Lee Watkins

Lee Watkins, 97, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 16, 2012, at her
daughter’s home in Holly Springs. She was a member of the Missionary
Society and a retired farmer. Services were held
at 12 noon on Nov. 21 at Sims Chapel MB Church in Michigan City, where
she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pastor James A.
Norman officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. She leaves four daughters, Marjorie
Jimmerson of Michigan City, Betty Beck of Holly Springs, Gloria
Watkins, Odessa Polk, both of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Thomas Watkins
of Kirkwood, Mo., Willie B. Watkins of Memphis; a sister, Sarah Seymour
of Memphis; 32 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, nine
great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Watkins.
