Peyton Lewis tries to get a shot off versus the Knights. |
Marshall takes two from West Memphis By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Marshall Academy basketball teams took double-digit wins over West Memphis Christian Monday, Nov. 12, at home. Peyton Lewis and Devonte Smith combined for 57 points in the Patriots’ 65-55 victory over the Black Knights. Lewis poured in 33. Smith added 24. “Peyton
was the Peyton we have to have to make a serious run at the ‘gold ball’
this year,” coach Craig Dailey said. “When he plays at that level, we
won’t be beat. “Devonte grew up against West
Memphis. He looked like a man among boys at times on both ends of the
floor. I think I just found me a post game.” The MA boys fell behind 9-2 in the early going, but Lewis and Smith led a surge that put the Pats up 16-14 after one quarter. The margin was stretched to 31-23 at the half and 48-33 following three periods. The Patriots’ next game will be Monday afternoon, Nov. 26, at the FedEx Forum in downtown Memphis, Tenn., versus Claiborne, La. “The
boys went 3-0 without the ones playing football,” Dailey said. “The
next time we take the floor, we will be at full strength. “I’m proud of the boys’ preseason work. They got a lot better as a group. Our practices will be wars when we get everybody out.” | | Elizabeth Skelton is fouled as she goes to the goal. |
Lady Patriots Elizabeth Skelton started the game with a three and the Lady Patriots never looked back. They beat West Memphis 37-24. Blake Martin finished with 13 points. Skelton had 12. “Blake
had a solid game and in particular in the second half, when she got hot
against their zone,” Coach Dailey said. “Elizabeth had another good
game. She gutted it up in the second half to give us some breathing
room.” The MA girls were up 20-12 at intermission. Skelton’s
drive to the bucket and two points made it 28-16 late in the third.
Then when Martin drilled a three at the 5:30 mark of the fourth, the
margin stretched to 34-20. Hutchison Tournament The Marshall varsity girls played in the Hutchison School Tournament Tuesday and Thursday of last week in Memphis. On November 13, they dropped a 49-22 decision to St. Agnes (Tenn.). Skelton scored 16 points in the loss. The Lady Patriots bounced back November 15 for a 48-33 win over the host school, Hutchison. Marshall took control early, leading 18-3 after one quarter. Skelton was again the top gun with 19 points. Megan Watkins scored 13 and Martin 11. Lewisburg Shootout The
Lady Pats saw their record go to 6-3 on the season Saturday morning
with a 43-13 loss to public school Ashland in the Lewisburg Shootout. MA fell behind 17-1 after one quarter. Skelton was the top Lady Patriot scorer with six. Schedule MA teams play at the FedEx Forum next Monday with the Lady Patriots starting action at 1 p.m. versus Claiborne.
