Hawks beat Rebels in home opener By CLAUDE VINSON The Holly Springs Hawks took their home court on November 6 with a foe from down the road. The Hickory Flat Rebels came to town to take part in the home opener for Holly High. The Lady Rebels didn’t make the trip so the “now squad” of the Lady Hawks gave the attendees a bit of a nostalgia trip with a 24-minute contest versus a “yesteryear squad.” The “now girls” prevailed with a score of 24-22. Making history By CLAUDE VINSON This could have been a prize fight. The Indians of Byhalia KO’ed the Blue Devils of Booneville in the second round of the 3A playoffs, and like Star Trek, are about to go where no Byhalia football team has gone before – to the third round of the state playoffs. Lady Cardinals off to strong start By BARRY BURLESON The Potts Camp girls are off to a 3-0 start. Coach Tana Miller saw her team down Myrtle, Ripley and Blue Mountain in the first week of a new basketball season. Behind The Scoreboard Last unbeaten goes down in ‘Big League’ What we have here is a tale of two leagues. The “Big League” (NFL) and the “Not So Big League” (NCAA). It was week 10 in the former and week 11 in the latter, and there were a couple of whopping surprises in both. I am not going to dwell too much on the “Not So Big League,” not because it is too painful, well maybe a little. New head coach leading Lady Indians By BARRY BURLESON Coach Reginald Jones had plenty of success at Hillcrest in Memphis, Tenn. Now he hopes to bring it across the state line to Byhalia High School. Jones came on board just a little more than a month ago as the new girls basketball coach at BHS. Byers teams rout Independence By BARRY BURLESON Domination best sums up the home openers for H.W. Byers last week. The Lady Lions won by 59 points and the Lions by 40 over Independence. Both teams improved to 2-0 to start the season. Cardinals, Lady Cards compete in Tupelo meet On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Potts Camp cross country teams ran the Tupelo Invitational at Ballard Park. The top finishers for the Lady Cardinals were Shauna Haney, 17:36; Lori Hendrix, 18:03; Amber Cooper, 19:00; Dana Jeffries, 19:56; Jakayla Johnson, 21:40; Hailey Miller, 22:07; and Taylor Johnson, 23:07. |
