Lady Cardinals off to strong start By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Potts Camp girls are off to a 3-0 start. Coach Tana Miller saw her team down Myrtle, Ripley and Blue Mountain in the first week of a new basketball season. “We
opened up with a busy week,” she said. “I definitely think the win over
Ripley was a big confidence builder. You never know what week one is
going to look like, but we came out with a strong week.” The Lady Cards had no trouble with Myrtle Tuesday of last week in the season opener, rolling to a 52-21 win at home. Potts Camp scored 11 in the first quarter, while holding the Lady Hawks scoreless. The lead was 25-10 at halftime. Three players hit for double digits – Tenesha Woods and Brittany Pitts with 12 each and Hayley Davis with 10. The Class 2A Potts Camp girls used a strong third quarter to turn back Class 3A power Ripley 73-69 Thursday night at home. The Lady Cardinals trailed 32-27 at the half but outscored the visitors 30-18 in the third. Then they hung on in the fourth. Woods gunned in a game-high 30 points for Potts Camp. Adding 12 each were Hayley Davis, Zana Davis and Jessica Patterson. Coach Miller’s team then wrapped up the successful first week of the season with an 85-50 rout of Blue Mountain Friday night. The visiting Lady Cards stormed to a 46-20 halftime lead. Woods was on fire again. She scored 25. Zana Davis had 12, Pitts 11 and Patterson 10. Potts Camp boys The Cardinals started 0-3 against the same three opponents. They
lost a close contest, 59-56, to Myrtle on opening night. The Potts Camp
boys led 16-15 after one quarter, trailed 27-26 at intermission and
were up 42-41 at the end of the third. But they couldn’t hold the lead
in the fourth. Jamarquis Foster was the Cards’ top scorer with 17. D’Arius Marble had 12 and Brantley Harris 11. The Cards fell behind Ripley early Thursday but battled back in the second half before losing 72-58. Potts Camp was down 46-21 at halftime. Foster poured in 23 points. Marble followed with 18, and Jarvis Jones scored 10. The
Cardinals then fell 87-64 Friday night at Blue Mountain. They trailed
44-31 at the half and were outscored 27-13 in the third period. Foster led Potts Camp with 29 points. Marble followed with 14. The Cardinal roster includes four seniors, one junior and seven sophomores. “Everybody
is a year older, and that helps,” coach Shawn Holtz said about his
Class 2A squad. “We are looking a lot better (than last year).” Another busy week follows this week. Potts
Camp teams hosted Hickory Flat Monday and visited Alcorn Central
Tuesday. They host Falkner Friday night and Byhalia next Tuesday, Nov.
