Obituaries Shirley Ann Woods Cathey
Shirley
Ann Woods Cathey, 55, of Memphis, Tenn., died Oct. 13, 2012, at
Methodist University Hospital. She was a former member of Hopewell No.
1 MB Church and later joined Hill Chapel. Services
were held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Burial
was in Hopewell No. 1 Cemetery. Pastor Robert Jones officiated. She
leaves her husband of 35 years, John Edward Cathey; four sons, Robert
Woods (Tomeka) of Byhalia, Cedric Mayes (Patricia), Ronnie Woods
(Laura), all of Memphis, Tenn., Mario Woods (Cassandra) of Grand
Rapids, Mich.; four daughters, Bessie Anderson (Keith) of Holly
Springs, Patricia Cathey Taylor (John), Teretha Hickerson (Rob), and
Tamika Woods (DeeDee) all of Memphis, Tenn.; five sisters, Doris Reed
of Horn Lake, Sarah Woods of Hickory Flat, Margaret Woods of Memphis,
Carol Rooks, Sandra Woods, both of Holly Springs; four brothers, Herman
Woods, Albert Lee Woods, both of Holly Springs, Eddie Woods, Clarence
Woods, both of Oxford; her mother-in-law Pearline Eason; 15
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers
were the Holly Springs Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers were
Robert Woods, Ronnie Woods, Cedric Mayes and Mario Woods. Jessie James Garner
Jessie
James Garner, 66, of Hickory Flat, died Oct. 18, 2012, at his home. He
was a retired laborer at Memphis Hardwood Flooring plant in Potts Camp.
He attended Royston Chapel CME Church. He was disabled. Visitation
will be Oct. 25 from 2 until 7 p.m. at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral
Home with family receiving from 5-7 p.m. and again Oct. 26 from 12 noon
- 12:55 at the church. Services will be held at 1
p.m. on Oct. 26 at Royston Chapel CME Church in Benton County. Burial
will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Gwendolyn Nelson, pastor, will
officiate. Rev. Roger Garner will deliver the eulogy. J.F. Brittenum
and Son Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. He
leaves his wife, Jewelene Sanders Garner; four sons, Reginald Garner,
Ronald Garner, both of Kentwood, Mich., Ricky Garner of Rock Island,
Ill., Randy Garner of Hickory Flat; two brothers, Larry Garner, Rev.
Roger Garner, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Maurice
Lewis, Dorian Holt, Calvin Scales, Jarrod Elliott, Carl Lewis, Maurice
Warren, Alonzo Tucker, Mark Tucker and Dwight Gray. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Vontarious Garner. Paula MeChelle Payton Holloway
Paula
MeChelle Payton Holloway, 45, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 21, 2012 at
her home. She was a member of St. Paul CME Church, where she served on
the Stewardess Board and as Missionary Fine Arts secretary. A graduate
of Potts Camp High School, she attended Northwest Community College and
was an assembly line worker at Carrier, Inc. in Collierville, Tenn. Visitation
will be held Oct. 26 from 1-4:30 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at St. Paul CME
Church in Lake Center and at Doxey Auditorium, Rust College, from 12
noon until 12:55 on Oct. 27. Services will be
held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Doxey Auditorium with burial in Cottrell
Memorial Garden. Rev. Charles Dooley will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and
Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She
leaves her mother, Rosie Stinson Payton of Holly Springs; her father
and stepmother, Keifers Ellis Sr. and Terry Ellis of Louin; two sons,
Christopher Terrell Payton, Bobby Carl Holloway, both of Holly Springs;
three stepsons, Edward Hardin of Olive Branch, Bobby Pegues, Broderick
Robinson, both of Holly Springs; two stepdaughters, Deidra
Pegues-Campbell, Datrice Pegues, both of Holly Springs; eight sisters,
Wanda McNeil, Claudette Payton, Pamela McNeil, all of Holly Springs,
Sandra Ambrose of Fayetteville, N.C., Rebekah Williams of Newton,
Michele Nicholson of Columbia, S.C., Kimberly Ellis of Chicago Heights,
Ill., Joan Cole of Memphis, Tenn.; four brothers, William Payton of
Holly Springs, Eric Payton of Arlington, Texas, Carl Payton of
Fayetteville, N.C., Keifers Ellis Jr. of Plainfield, Ill.; and 11

Courtney
Tawan Jackson, 29, died Oct. 17, 2012. He graduated from Independence
High School and was a correctional officer at Marshall County
Correctional Facility. Services were held at 2
p.m. on Oct. 21 at Thyatira Church of Christ Family Life Center in
Senatobia. Rev. Ronnie McClain, pastor, officiated. Serenity Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his parents, Calvin and Irma Jackson; his daughter, Zxya; brother and sister, Cedric Burnside and Sonya Jackson. He was preceded in death by family members R.L. Burnside, Alice Mae Burnside, Mildred Burnside and R.L. Burnside Jr. Pallbearers were co-workers at Marshall County Correctional Facility. Helen Marie Joyner Helen Marie Joyner, 60, of Memphis, Tenn., died Oct. 21, 2012, at her home. She was a Baptist. Visitation will be Oct. 25, 5-9, at Holly Springs Funeral Home. Services
will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 26 at Holly Springs Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Southwoods Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home will

husband, Wilbur C. Joyner Jr.; two sons, William Joseph Joyner of
Memphis, Jeffrey Paul Joyner of Bartlett, Tenn.; three daughters,

Crystal Marie Joyner of Brighton, Tenn.; a brother, Charles W. Akins of

Dean McKinney, 62, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 21, 2012, at Sanctuary
Hospice House in Tupelo. He was a graduate of Holly Springs High School
and a machine operator at Maury Manufacturing in Holly Springs. Visitation will be Oct. 26 from 2-7 p.m. and on Oct. 27, from 10-10:55 a.m., both at J.F. Brittenum Funeral Home. Services
will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 27 at J.F. Brittenum Funeral Home

Barnett McDerment, 86, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 18, 2012, at Trinity
Missions Nursing Home. She was the widow of Walter McDerment, a member
of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, in Hickory Grove, Tenn. and a
registered nurse. Services were held at 11 a.m.
on Oct. 20 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hickory
Grove Baptist Cemetery. Rev. Bobby Williams officiated. She
leaves three sons, Mitchell McDerment, Michael McDerment, both of Honea
Path, S.C., Lynn McDerment of Lucedale; a daughter, Patsy Holcomb of
Moscow, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers
were Cliff McDerment, Jon McDerment, Bryan Miller, Mitch McDerment, Lee

Garlene Shelton, 84, of Memphis, Tenn., died Oct. 21, 2012, in
Collierville, Tenn. She was a member of Southmoore Baptist Church and a
quality clerk with Bemis Bag Company. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 23 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. She
leaves three sons, Don Smith (Dian) of Hickory Flat, James H. Smith Jr.
(Brenda) of Red Banks, Roy Neil Smith (Marsha) of Olive Branch; two
daughters, Jo Ann Bullard (Gerald) of Olive Branch, Jan Taubken of

L. Still, 78, of Byhalia, died Oct. 15, 2012, at Baptist Trinity
Hospice House in Collierville, Tenn. He was the widower of Rose Mary
Still. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 18 at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial was in Surrette Cemetery in Arkabutla. He
leaves his daughters, Diane Renner of Byhalia and Deborah Brooks of
Memphis, Tenn.; a son, Billy Still of Southaven; five grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
