Murder case goes to grand jury By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
father and his son have waived rights to a preliminary hearing in a
stabbing incident that took the life of Robert Brown Jr. earlier this
year, said sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Larry Pointer
Jr., 38, of the 500 block of Brick and Tile Road, and Larry Pointer
III, 19, of the 300 block of West College Avenue, remain in jail under
$1 million bond. The case is to be presented to a Marshall County grand
jury in 2013, he said. Full Story
Stretch of Hwy. 78 dedicated to Minor By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
formal dedication ceremony for Highway 78 stretching from the DeSoto
County line to the Benton County line was held last week in memory of
former transportation commissioner William “Bill” Minor. Elected
officials from Benton and Marshall counties and Holly Springs, as well
as members of Minor’s family and extended network of friends, gathered
at the Multi-Purpose Building in Holly Springs for the unveiling of the
memorial marker in his honor. Full Story
Storm damage minimal in county By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Workers cut limbs away from over Virginia Ivester’s driveway so she could get out to go to work Thursday morning of last week. Ivester,
who lives at the corner of Salem Avenue and East Boundary in Holly
Springs, was one of only a few who had a tree down as a result of the
Wednesday night, Oct. 17, storms that rolled through the area. Full Story
Cunningham president of statewide association for yet another term Ernest Cunningham was elected president of the Mississippi Justice Court Judges Association and will serve the 2012-13 term. This is the third term as president for the Marshall County judge after serving in both 1987-88 and 2007-08. Full Story
VFW, Lions Club seek oldest veteran The
Collins-Hurdle VFW Post 5697 and Byhalia Lions Club are seeking the
oldest living veteran in the county to honor at this year’s Christmas
party for vets. Danny Tate with the VFW said
organizers of the annual Christmas program, begun by the Clydesdale
Christmas Store to provide for National Guard troops serving in Iraq
and Afghanistan and their families, want to recognize the oldest

City police go to 86 calls Holly Springs police officers went to 86 calls last week, according to chief William Hollowell. They
included – disturbances, 7; alarms, 11; larcenies, 2; assaults, 1;
burglaries, 1; accidents, 6; emergency assists, 3; funeral escorts, 4;
auto breaking and entering, 1; malicious mischief, 1; check on
shut-ins, 1; and 48 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to 6

Byhalia police go to 44 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 44 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5;
miscellaneous, 10; escorts, 7; disturbances, 3; animals, 4; motor
vehicle accidents, 3; fires, 1; medical, 10; trespassing, 1. Byhalia police officers also made three arrests and wrote 11 citations last week.
