Some
Holly Springs citizens, who have complained for years that no progress
is being made on two state grants, faced off with the mayor and board
of aldermen recently and demanded answers. According
to Kevin Upchurch, executive director of the Mississippi Department of
Finance and Administration, the city is two quarters behind on
reporting requirements on a grant with $80,019 remaining to restore
Chalmers Institute and a grant with $443,399 remaining to restore Hill
Crest Cemetery. The original grant figures were about $90,000 for the
Chalmers Institute project and two grants totaling $500,000 for the
Hill Crest Cemetery project. Full Story

Friday, Oct. 12, was “Think Pink Day” at
Carlisle’s Big Star as the business showed its support for Breast
Cancer Awareness in Marshall County. October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. Pink balloons were launched that afternoon as part of the
activities. The “Big Star Baggers” are consistently leading
fund-raisers in Marshall County’s Relay for Life. “It’s amazing what
they raise,” said Martha Carlisle, referring to the store’s employees.
“They work at it year-round and that’s what it takes.” |
Shooting suspect in custody; two sought By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A shooting between three suspects caused no injuries at H&R Grocery on Cayce Road Saturday, said sheriff Kenny Dickerson. One suspect has been arrested and is in jail while two other suspects remain at large, he said. Full Story
HSUD adopts new wholesale rate structure By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A much discussed time-of-use (TOU) wholesale rate structure went into effect at Holly Springs Utility Department October 1. The
wholesale rate is the rate electric power distributors like HSUD will
pay Tennessee Valley Authority for power. TVA moved to get TOU

The future of the Holly Springs-Marshall County Airport is bright. “We’re
in a great position, with our economic development, to grow the
airport,” manager Justin Hall said. “We’re excited about the future.” Holly Springs Rotary Club members visited the airport Wednesday, Oct. 10, for their weekly meeting. Full Story
ICS hosts luncheon to celebrate success By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
ICS Head Start leadership met with community stakeholders last week at
Annie’s Restaurant to say “thank you” and to update everyone on the
status of the organization. About 130 VIPs from
over the area attended to hear the good news. ICS received a spotless
review this time around from the federal regulators and will not have
to undergo another review for five years or reapply for funding for
another five years, said Eloise McClinton, executive director of ICS. Full Story

‘Souvenir of Mississippi’ installed Randy
Hayes, artist and photographer, of Holly Springs, has completed the
installation of artwork commissioned by the Mississippi Museum of Art
in Jackson’s downtown cultural district. It
consists of a series of photographs of Mississippi landscapes taken
from a collection by Hayes. The artist used black and white images of
various landscapes to construct the installation over two walkways at
The Art Garden. The outdoor museum complements the exterior of the
Museum of Art. Full Story
