Legislators visit Holly Springs on FAM Tour
By SUE WATSON
A Mississippi legislative group of nine House and one Senate member visited Holly Springs and Corinth recently as part of the 2012 Mississippi Tourism Association Legislative FAM Tour.
The familiarization tour group spent nearly two days in Holly Springs, seeing the top tourist attractions and fine restaurants.
Neal McCoy, executive director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Tupelo, serves on the legislative committee with the Mississippi Tourism Association. He said the purpose of the tour is three-fold – exposure of legislators to the tourism products across the state, help legislators make state and tourism laws as friendly as possible, and meet the communities’ front-line employees.
“They can be advocates for tourism across the state,” McCoy said. “Mississippi is a drive market. We are seeing people want authentic experiences rather than ‘roller coaster’ experiences.”
McCoy said a roller coaster ride is the same no matter which theme park you visit.
“But rarely can some things like Graceland Too, and the antebellum houses be repeated anywhere else,” he said.
“The people of Holly Springs are treating us warmly, the same way a tourist would be treated.”
