shootings, one resulting in death, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. He

Owner wants subdivision rezoned By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County Board of Supervisors has been asked by a third
developer to dissolve a 50-lot subdivision because lots are not selling. Bruce
Wring, represented by his son David Wring, requested the subdivision on
Smith Grove Road and Etherlene Drive be dissolved. It was drawn up
several years ago into 1.5- to 4.5-acre lots, and he said it is costing
them about $150 a year per 1.5-acre lot. The land would only be taxed
about $4 an acre a year as farmland, according to the Marshall County
tax assessor’s office. Full Story
City to celebrate 175th By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The City of Holly Springs will take three days this fall to celebrate the 175th anniversary of its founding. The
event, promoted by Holly Springs Main Street Chamber, will have
something for everyone. As usual, historic homes and buildings will be
open for tours. But the opening ceremony is planned for Friday, Nov.
30, at 5 p.m. on the downtown square where tree and city lights will be
lit for the Christmas season. A birthday cupcake celebration and
special performances will take place on opening night. Full Story

Belk: family man who loved his community By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Friends
of Fred M. Belk Jr. will miss the man who was respected by law
enforcement and the community for his work as a private attorney and
county prosecutor. Belk, who retired in 2007, died Saturday. He
was county prosecutor in the murder trial of Bart Meese, the man
convicted of killing former Marshall County Sheriff Osborne Bell. Full Story
Holly Springs police officers respond to 113 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 113 calls last week, according to interim chief Lt. John Norman. The
calls included – disturbances, 6; alarms, 28; larcenies, 8; assaults,
2; accidents, 11; assists to agencies, 2; auto burglaries, 2; funeral
escorts, 5; domestics, 6; 911 hang-ups, 1; malicious mischief, 3; and
39 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher answered 12 calls. Full Story

Holly Springs Main Street Chamber held its first meeting as a merged
organization September 20 at the Beckley Center at Rust College. The
Chamber and Main Street merged August 1. At the meeting, a new director for the new organization was introduced – Shanette Folsom. Full Story
Fire damages Byhalia home By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
second story addition to alderman Joe Tunstall’s house on Northside
Drive in Byhalia caught fire Tuesday around 8:49 a.m., according to
Marshall County fire investigator Tracy Jeffries. Byhalia, Barton and Holly Springs fire departments turned out to fight the fire, he said. The
fire started on the south end of the second story and spread to the
attic of the original home, damaging both portions of the house,
Jeffries said. But the majority of the house was saved, he said. The
cause of the fire has not been determined and Jeffries said he and the
state fire marshal are investigating the blaze. Byhalia fire chief
Leland Reed was unavailable for comment at press time.

Jailer arrested and charged with conspiracy By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
Marshall County jailer has been dismissed from his duties and charged
with conspiracy to introduce illegal drugs in a correctional facility,
according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Jared
Ross Stevens, 26, of the 4000 block of Highway 349, Potts Camp, was
arrested Monday night and charged. He was released Tuesday on $10,000
bond and awaits further court action, the sheriff said. Full Story
Shaw enters plea to embezzlement, awaits sentencing in federal court Deborah
Shaw of Waterford entered a plea agreement with the U.S. District Court
for the Northern District of Mississippi to one count of embezzling
money from Merchants & Farmers Bank in Holly Springs. She signed the plea agreement August 28. Full Story
Tourism bureau receives award Last week, the
Mississippi Development Authority and Mississippi Tourism Association
presented a host of awards to tourism entities around the state during
the 2012 Governor’s Conference on Tourism. Held
at Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica September 23-25, the awards
ceremony showcased the best and brightest tourism organizations, staff
