Cardinals snatch first win of season By BARRY BURLESON Editor It was an exciting night Friday for Potts Camp basketball teams when they visited Strayhorn. The boys picked up their first win of the season, while the girls won an overtime thriller. Coach Shaun Holtz called his young Cardinals’ 47-44 victory over Strayhorn “awesome.” Both teams entered the game winless. “I have such a good bunch of kids,” he said. “They have worked so hard this season and fought hard every game. “It was great to get a win and get the monkey off our back. Everyone was so excited.” He has just one senior. Most team members are freshmen. The
Cardinals fell behind Strayhorn 10-4 after one quarter but tied the
contest at 18 at halftime. They then took a 35-28 lead into the fourth
quarter and held on for the sweet win in Region 2-2A competition. Hayley
Davis was the hero in the first game of the night. She hit a
last-second three in overtime to give the Lady Cardinals a 66-63 win. Coach Tana Miller said her team gained possession in the closing seconds of the extra period. “We missed an easy two and on the rebound, the ball got loose,” she said. After a scramble, it was tossed to Davis, who drilled the game-winner. The Lady Cardinals, 3-1 in the district, led 26-24 at the half. Top
scorer was Tenesha Woods with 18. Brittany Pitts had 15 and Hayley
Davis 13. Hayley Davis also hit a three to tie the game at 63 with
about 40 seconds left in overtime. Potts Camp-Bruce The Lady Cardinals battled district-leading Bruce hard for four quarters January 17 at home before losing 69-66. “We came out of the starting gate playing hard,” Coach Miller said. “It was a battle from start to finish. “We had the look (a three try) we wanted at the end. It just didn’t fall.” Potts Camp was down 32-31 at the halfway point. Woods scorched the nets for 25 points. Hayley Davis was close behind with 20. In the nightcap, Lajohn Curry’s 22-point performance wasn’t enough as the Potts Camp boys lost 63-54 to the Trojans. The Cardinals fell behind 22-8 in the first quarter and fought Bruce evenly the rest of the way. Lady Cards-Tremont The Potts Camp girls knocked off Tremont 67-54 Saturday in the Wallzappers Girls Classic held at North Pontotoc High School. They built a 33-22 halftime advantage en route to upping their overall record to 13-11. Woods was again the top point producer with 23. Pitts had 16 and Jessica Peterson 11.
