Chamber merger
not likely soon By SUE
WATSON The Holly Springs Main Street Chamber and Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce met last week to discuss the pros and cons of merging both organizations. The outcome was fruitful in planning to work more closely on projects that will help serve the entire county, but merger is not likely soon.
Absentee voting begins By BARRY BURLESON Those who have reached the legal voting age of 18 or others who have not yet registered to vote can do so in person by October 6, if they want to participate in the November 6 election. The Marshall County circuit clerk’s office will be open until noon on Saturday, Oct. 6. Mail-in applications can be accepted if postmarked by October 8. Four county schools go up a level By BARRY BURLESON School rankings, recently released by the Mississippi Department of Education, show steps up and steps down inside the Marshall County School District. The district, as a whole, kept its level from the previous year, Academic Watch, which falls fourth in the seven-level tier. Last bikers/blues event of season this Thursday By SUE WATSON The grand finale of Bikers Night Out/Blues Alley is Thursday night. Bikers arrive at 6 p.m. and music starts at 7 p.m. Come ready to polish off the 2012 Holly Springs Main Street Chamber promotional event with flair, fun and food. Vendors are on site for hungry tummies. Chalmers fund-raiser successful By SUE WATSON The second Wrecking Ball, a fund-raiser for the preservation of Chalmers Institute, was a success. Attendance was over 175 and most all auction items were sold, including fine art paintings and jewelry. New ministry opens on Randolph By SUE WATSON A group of evangelists and pastors in the area have opened a ministry at 120 Randolph Street in Holly Springs that will feed the hungry and minister to those in need of spiritual food. Four ministers are presently involved in administering to those in need – Evangelist Velkay Faulkner (Tabernacle of Prayer, 30 West Woodward), Evangelist Anita Malone (Mt. Peel Baptist, 1090 Mt. Peel Road), Pastor Napoleon LeSueur (Tabernacle of Prayer), and Rev. Rondias Cox (Mt. Peel Baptist). Supervisors get legislative update By SUE WATSON County consultant Gary Anderson recently updated the board of supervisors on some possible changes coming down the pike in the Legislature. He said legislation that would turn the responsibility of juvenile justice could be handed down to the counties. There are hearings in Jackson on this subject, he said, and the state is having to bring juvenile justice issues into compliance with federal laws. Holly Springs police respond to 95 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 95 calls last week, according to interim police chief Lt. John Norman. The calls included – disturbances, 10; alarms, 20; larcenies, 4; burglaries, 2; accidents, 9; assists to agencies, 4; auto burglaries, 3; funeral escorts, 2; domestics, 4; 911 hang-ups, 2; shots fired, 1; and 40 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to 9 calls. Byhalia police respond to accidents, more The Byhalia Police Department responded to 41 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 3; miscellaneous, 17; escorts, 6; domestic, 1; assists, 2; motor vehicle accidents, 2; fires, 3; medical, 7. Byhalia police officers also made two arrests last week and wrote seven citations. Reward offered for information in hit-and-run By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is seeking information that could lead to the identity of the vehicle and driver who hit a resident in the 5600 block of Hernando Road, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The victim, Tracy Hardin, 47, of the Hernando Road area, was airlifted to The Med after a passerby called 911 Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2: 49 a.m. reporting a man in the road. Hardin is in critical condition due to his injuries. He has undergone several surgeries, the sheriff said. |
