Hawks down ’Cats
By BARRY BURLESON
The Holly Springs Hawks wrapped up the non-district portion of their schedule in fine fashion Friday night.
Coach Chris Rankin’s squad went on the road and got solid play on both sides of the football for a 33-6 win over Independence.
The Hawks evened their season mark at 3-3 with Region 1-3A competition starting this week.
“It was very important to get the win before district play,” Rankin said.
Tevin Jones was once again the star on offense. He had 25 carries for 175 yards and four touchdowns. His scoring runs covered 40, 7, 2 and 15 yards.
Ronnell Boyland followed with 15 carries for 75 yards.
Kartyea Cathey scored the Hawks’ final touchdown on a 44-yard burst.
Keivis Reeves was three of four on extra-point kicks.
Leading a strong defensive effort Friday night was Jerry Thomas.
Thomas had three solo tackles and four assists, forced three fumbles, recovered a fumble and also had two sacks.
“He had a beast game on defense,” Rankin said.
The head coach said the Hawks’ defensive coordinator, Donald Deans, had a great game plan.
“The defense, overall, played a great game,” Rankin said.
The Wildcats’ only score came on a fumble returned for six.
The Hawks will face district foe Ripley this Friday night at home. Kickoff is set for 7:30. The Tigers are also 3-3.
