News BriefsFund-raiser Saturday for Chalmers Institute The public is invited to come to The Wrecking Ball this Saturday night for a noble cause and a wonderful evening. The
big event will include some extremely fine music from
singer-songwriters Shannon McNally and Amy LeVere and some intellectual
discourse from Robert Hicks, emcee for the evening and New York Times
best selling author. Hicks will share some of his craft. Dinner
will be served by Kenny Dickerson and his cooking team and will consist
of barbecue and all the trimmings. A silent auction and live auction
will be held to raise funds for the restoration of Chalmers Institute. Chalmers
Institute celebrates its 175th year and can boast its once having
housed the first chartered university in the state of Mississippi: “The
University of Holly Springs”...a brief, but shining star in the (then)
newly settled hills of northern Mississippi. This event will be set under the treed canopy of historic Chalmers Institute’s campus. Guests
will have a view of what Preserve Marshall County and Holly Springs
Inc. are doing on this project and the purpose for saving the structure
from an untimely demise. The stabilization work
on the 1837 portion of the building – the west wall – is now in
progress thanks to the support of the community. All
proceeds go to providing matching grant dollars to restore the
structure and return it to community use, thanks to the support of a
Community Heritage Preservation Grant from the Mississippi Department
of Archives and History. The event begins at 6
p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Tickets can be purchased by calling
888-687-4765 or on line at www.preservemarshallcounty.org/wrecking-ball. Chalmers Institute is located at 151 S. West Boundary Street, Holly Springs. Potts Camp Fun Day set for Saturday The Town of Potts Camp is sponsoring its third annual Fun Day on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Potts Camp Park. Activities will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There
