Jury finds Howell guilty of manslaughter By SUE WATSON After seven and a half hours of deliberation, a Marshall County jury found Denorris Howell guilty of manslaughter in the July 2010 shooting death of LaKeith Jones. The latest corporate partner in Marshall County’s Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park was given a hearty welcome by Gov. Phil Bryant, local officials and members of the Mississippi Development Authority staff. Bryant assured Roxul, a Canadian manufacturer of stone wool insulation, of the full backing of the state and its workforce development to help the company get established. Roxul expects to be in operation by June 2014 and will employ 150 people after going into full operation. State helps with bridges By SUE WATSON There will be a lot of bridge replacement or repair in the next few years, according to Mitch Turner, District 2 engineer with the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Three bridges on Highway 7 North are scheduled to be replaced and will ease the truck traffic on other roads in the county, Turner said. Motorists will not be inconvenienced during the bridge work because the highway will be realigned after the new bridges are built beside the old ones, he said.

A gathering of about 130 met at The Flame in Byhalia last month to network and enjoy a catfish dinner provided by Sheriff Kenny Dickerson and his crew. Droves flock to hummer weekend By SUE WATSON
It started off cool Friday, the first day of Strawberry Plains Audubon Center’s annual hummingbird celebration, and people seemed to come early to beat the heat. There were 750 tickets sold by 11 a.m. Total attendance figures for the weekend are estimated at 6,800, according to director Bubba Hubbard. Friday and Saturday attendance was down due to heat Friday and rain Saturday morning, he said. More blues this Thursday night The stage is set for Thursday evening’s Bikers/Blues Night Out on the downtown square in Holly Springs, a Main Street Chamber promotional event. This week’s lineup includes Brown Sugar. who will open at 7 p.m. Memphis band Soul Finger, featuring Harold Washington, will be back this week. His band was a hit during the first year run of Bikers Night Out. Holly Springs police respond to 84 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 84 calls last week, according to interim police chief Lt. John Norman. Calls included – disturbances, 5; alarms, 15; larcenies, 4; accidents, 8; assists to agencies, 3; assaults, 4; auto burglaries, 3; funeral escorts, 3; domestics, 5; checkups on the elderly or disabled, 2; shots fired, 1; malicious mischief, 1; and 30 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to 5 calls. Library offers computer classes Basic Computer Classes will be offered at the Marshall County Library in October. Learn basic computer skills and how to apply them. Classes are free. In the two-hour class you will learn how to use a mouse, basic computer terminology, how to open a program and navigate through that program. No experience is necessary.
