The suspects took an undetermined amount of controlled substances, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Cemetery drama intensifies By SUE WATSON
A large group of people attended the Holly Springs Board of Aldermen meeting last week to express concern over the handling of the cemetery. A number of benches had been removed from gravesides and some of those affected voiced opposition to the way the historic Hill Crest Cemetery is being cared for. County sprays for mosquitoes By SUE WATSON In an attempt to thwart the possibility of a West Nile Virus problem in Marshall County, administrator Larry Hall said his department has begun spraying. The county has only one spray truck so supervisors will have to use their judgement on which roads to cover, according to supervisor Ronnie Joe Bennett. Audubon, schools receive support By SUE WATSON The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi is investing in its communities and its children – its future. Tom Pittman, president and CEO, presented a check for $6,745 to its partner, Strawberry Plains Audubon Center. The money will be used for engaging children in nature-centered activities such as construction of houses for the chimney swifts (migratory birds that build their nests in tiny protected spaces like chimneys). Marshall County children will participate in the project by constructing some chimney swift towers in vo-tech classes at H.W. Byers and by visiting the nature center. Frank Swords: ‘A truly great citizen’ By SUE WATSON A key player in the economic and community development in the City of Holly Springs has died. Frank Swords, 69, a benevolent father to the community, was publicly recognized for his participation in community parades with his horse-drawn carriage, support of education and schools, and quietly providing for the personal needs of untold numbers, according to his friend and neighbor Kenny Dickerson.
Police go to 114 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 114 calls last week, according to interim police chief Lt. John Norman. Correction There was an error in the story headlined “Supervisors want county Chamber” in the August 23 issue of The South Reporter. The Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce requested an annual donation from the county of $10,000 a year, according to executive director Sarah Sawyer. Last year they received $5,622 a year, she said. The board of supervisors provided the same level of support last year for the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce. The South Reporter apologizes for the error and any confusion it may have caused. The newspaper is glad to set the record straight. |
