Obituaries

Walker Byrd Sr.

Walker Byrd Sr., 78, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 8, 2012, in Olive Branch. He was Pentecostal, a truck driver and a veteran.

Services were held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 11 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Bro. Frank Feathers officiated.

He leaves two sons, Walker Byrd Jr. (Sara) of Olive Branch, Tommy Byrd of Lewisburg; three daughters, Audrey Modares of Southaven, Kathy Cothern of Holly Springs, Katie Lobsinger of Southaven; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by grandchildren Jonathan Cothern, Jack Byrd and Destiny Byrd.

Pallbearers were Tim Cothern, Tommy Byrd Jr., David Looney, Stephen Norman, Jack Destin Byrd, Justin Mensi, Ronnie Bolden and Joe Byrd. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Jamison and Ricky Bailey.

James Therman Crouch

James Therman Crouch, 83, of Potts Camp, died Aug. 6, 2012, at Baptist New Albany Hospital. He was a Baptist and a logger.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 9 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

He leaves two sons, J.D. Crouch, James Crouch, both of Thaxton; a stepson, Roger Bridges of Potts Camp; two daughters, Janice Phillips of New Albany, Media Stewart of McComb; a stepdaughter, Nancy Bridges of Pontotoc; a brother, David Crouch of Potts Camp; two sisters, Callie Hale of Tupelo, Linda Algee of Corinth; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Robert Ralph Loftin Sr.

Robert Ralph Loftin Sr., 85, died Aug. 12, 2012, at Baptist Trinity Hospice House in Collierville, Tenn. He was a farmer with Bryce Corp.

Services were held at 5 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

He leaves his wife, Ella Jean Loftin; a son, Joseph Loftin (Patricia) of Potts Camp; a daughter, Susan Snipes (Jimmy) of Collierville; a brother, Luke Loftin of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Doris Howell of Red Banks, Ann Taylor of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sons, Robert Ralph Loftin Jr., Richard Brewer Loftin, Terry Lewis Loftin; and a daughter, Carolyn Rebecca Loftin.

Melia C. Houston

Melia C. Houston, 83, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 8, 2012. She was the widow of James H. Houston.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 10 at Memphis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn.

She leaves two daughters, Cathy Allen (Autry), Janice Hayes (Chris); a sister, Helen M. Carter (James); a brother, Paul Maher; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy and Michael Houston.

Windell Howell

Windell “Wink” Howell, 55, of Potts Camp, died Aug. 6, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was a member of Reid’s Gift MB Church in Potts Camp and a factory worker with Ashley Furniture Company in Ecru.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11 at Potts Camp School’s gym. Burial was in St. Mary’s United Methodist Church Cemetery in Potts Camp. Evangelist Dr. Bessie Tables officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two daughters, Tiana Howell Faulkner, Arnetta Howell, both of Potts Camp; two sisters, Shareen Holden-Keller, Carla Holden, both of Illinois; seven brothers, Reggie Holden, Alex Holden, Eric Holden, Alan Holden, Kevin Holden, all of Rockford, Ill., Brady Jones of Blue Mountain, James Howard Marion of Holly Springs; and two grandchildren.

Timothy O’Neal Key

Timothy “Tim-Tim” O’Neal Key, 30, of Oxford, died Aug. 6, 2012, in Water Valley. He was a native of Lafayette County.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 11 at East St. Peters MB Church in Oxford. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. William Woods officiated. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Jennifer Key of Holly Springs; his mother, Shirley Key of Oxford; his father, W.C. Key of Oxford; a sister, Brenda Price of Jackson; a brother, Derrick Key of Oxford; and a grandmother, Evelyn Ramsey of Oxford.

Leslie Megan Mason

Leslie Megan Mason, 26, of Ashland, died Aug. 9, 2012, in Ashland. She was Episcopal and a clerk with Tippah County Co-Op.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bluff Springs Cemetery. Rev. Rusty Miller officiated.

She leaves her mother, Leigh Skelton (Steve) of Ashland; her father, Larry Mason Sr. of Moscow, Tenn.; her brother, Larry T. Mason Jr. (Heather) of Ashland; her sister, Sarah Mason of Ashland; and grandmothers Rosia Lee Skelton of Ashland, Dorothy Mason of Michigan City.

Rosie Lee Phillips

Rosie Lee (Harden) Phillips died July 26, 2012, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Byhalia.

Services were held on July 31 at St. Matthew MB Church in Byhalia, where she was a member.

She leaves 14 children, Joseph Phillips, Conell Sr. (Patricia) Phillips, Juanita (Terry) Smith, Manuel (Virginia) Harden, Sammie Jr. (Anita) Phillips, Pattie Huderson, James (Sherry) Phillips Sr., Nema Harden, Bernice (James) Cole, Shelia Strickland, Ermon (Melmarie) Harden, Mosetta (Randy) Jamerson, Mary Phillips and Earnest (Sythelia) Alexander; 40 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two children, Earnest Lee Phillips and Patrick Alexander; seven sisters and two brothers.

Joyce Jackson Sesley

Joyce Jackson Sesley, 60, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Benton County, died Aug. 5, 2012, at her home. She was a member of Lake Grove MB Church in Memphis.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 at Salt & Light Ministries in Lamar. Burial was in Sims Chapel MB Church Cemetery in Michigan City. Bishop L.T. Mason officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sons, David Jackson, Dariel Jackson, both of Memphis; her father, Sylvester Tipler Sr. of Memphis; three sisters, Daisy Bell, Mary Briggs, Georgeanna Smith, all of Memphis; a brother, Steven Tipler of Memphis; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Sylvester Tipler Jr.

Annie Mae Jones Tate

Annie Mae Jones Tate, 58, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 4, 2012, at Baptist Trinity Hospice House in Colliervile, Tenn. She was a member of Mt. Olive #2 MB Church in Collierville, Tenn., president of Pastor’s Aide, a Sunday school teacher and supervisor of Kroger in Collierville.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11 at Chulahoma MB Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe Nathan Wiley officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Will Tate; five daughters, Sharonda Phillips of Byhalia, LaQuita Phillips of Holly Springs, Cheryl Hughie, Malinda Tate, Toya Tate, all of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Christopher Jones of Birmingham, Ala., Will Tate Jr. of Memphis; three sisters, Jessie Mae Echols of Byhalia, Sallie Mae Echols of Washington, D.C., Florine Echols Jones of Oxon Hill, Md.; two brothers, Joe L. Echols of Holly Springs, Willie Echols of Midland, Tx.; and 15 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Parnell Jones and Darnell Echols.

Jan Yarborough McGroom

Jan Yarborough McGroom, 69, of Ashland, died July 31, 2012, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. She was the widow of Russell McGroom and a dietician.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 3 at Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Robert Buse officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sons, David Magee of Snow Lake, Donald Ray Magee of McComb; a daughter, Sharron Dunaway of Brookhaven; a brother, Harvey L. Yarborough of Birmingham, Ala.; three sisters, Carol Kirchenbaum of Diamondhead, Molly Lee of Tylertown, Lisa Grant of Vicksburg; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
