Church awaits appellate court answer By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Opulent
Life Church appealed a lower court ruling that denied an injunction to
declare the Holly Springs zoning ordinance in violation of the RLUIP
Act (Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act) and
therefore unenforceable. The church, led by
pastor Telsa DeBerry, is represented by Liberty Institute attorneys and
by attorneys from Gibson Dunn Law Firm. Liberty Institute’s attorneys
were in New Orleans, La., last week before a three-judge panel of the
5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, along with attorney Ki Jones with

of the Holly Springs and Hernando National Guard Armories pause for a
photo before touring historic Holly Springs. Shown are Maj. Mark Fox,
Jeff Lott, Shelden Pope, Chris Earp, Bill and Brenda West, Tim
Campbell, Ronnie Luther, Michele and John Stuber (in back at right) and
Sgt. James Hamblin. Members of the Mississippi National Guard with the
Holly Springs/Hernando unit (Detachment 1, Company A, 2nd 198 Combined
Arms Battalion) were given a tour of historic Holly Springs. The tour
began at Montrose at the invitation of the Holly Springs Garden Club in
appreciation for the guard’s support of Arbor Day activities and the
gift of an American flag. Hamblin presented Montrose with a flag flown
September 11, 2009, over the QWest Army base in Iraq. “Sgt. Hamblin
presented Montrose with a flag and took interest in our history,” said
garden club member Michele Stuber. Hamblin brought friends from his
unit who, along with himself, are history buffs and want to learn more
about the history of Holly Springs. Luther, who with his wife Brenda,
helped share Christmas gifts and dinner for the troops and their
families for the last eight years through the Christmas Store, said the
guardsmen and their families will be treated again this year. Funds
will be raised by the Byhalia Lions Club, which is holding a golf
tourney at the Cherokee Valley Golf Course in Olive Branch. The
tourney, scheduled for September 20, will include a four-man scramble,
a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner is served at 11:30 a.m. For additional
