The
strong-arm robbery of BancorpSouth in New Albany drew lots of attention
Thursday afternoon as the suspect was pursued through city streets,
along Highway 15 and to the intersection of Highway 78. As
the flight ensued, New Albany police officers anticipated the suspect
would go west toward Memphis, Tenn., and they were right, according to

Two suspects bound over to grand jury By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
preliminary hearing for four defendants charged with aggravated assault
and kidnapping of an H.W. Byers student was held in justice court
Tuesday of last week. Two defendants, Gregory
Jenkins, 30, of Hardeman County, Tenn., and Alexander Carter, 24, of
Saulsbury, Tenn., waived their rights to a preliminary hearing and
await the outcome of a grand jury proceeding. Jenkins was represented
by attorney John Keith Perry of Southaven. Carter was represented by
attorney Kent Smith, public defender in Marshall County. Full Story
MDOT to sell bonds to complete I-269 By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County Industrial Development Authority board of directors
approved borrowing $163 million on behalf of the Mississippi Department
of Transportation last week. The money will be
raised in bonds to complete the construction of I-269 through Marshall
County. MDOT has already sold $52 million in bonds and the money has
been either committed or spent, according to Steve Pittman, financial
consultant to MDOT. The first $52 million was for paying for the
engineering, design, rights-of-way and some construction on the highway
that has already begun. Full Story
Twins tell life stories By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
pair of twins, who grew up in Oxford, have written their first book,
“y’all twins?,” packing it with stories about their elementary school
age experiences in the town famous for producing literary giants like
the late William Faulkner. Margaret and Katherine
King were recent guests of Friends of the Library in Holly Springs,
where they read excerpts from their book and told stories. They enjoy
spelling out what they think about their personalities and how they
played pranks. They switched places while in school and still do it
occasionally to enjoy the sense of shock and surprise they get from
unsuspecting friends and associates. Full Story

City police go to 125 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 125 calls last week, according to interim chief Lt. John Norman. The
calls included – disturbances, 11; alarms, 22; larcenies, 5; accidents,
4; assists to agencies, 3; assaults, 3; funeral escorts, 2; burglaries,
2; auto theft, 1; domestics, 4; checks on shut-ins, 1; 911 hang-ups, 3;
malicious mischief, 1; robbery, 2; shots fired, 3; auto burglary, 1;
suicide, 1; and 56 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to

Truck crashes into building
A
pickup truck crashed into the front of the new Holly Springs Regional
Office of the Mississippi Division of Medicaid Monday morning. The
building is located on J.M. Ash Drive, across the street from the
police department. Interim chief John Norman said it appeared the
female driver of the truck was pulling into a parking spot and
accidentally proceeded into the lobby area of the structure. About 15
minutes before the crash, he said the lobby was full of people taking
care of business. When the crash happened, the lobby was empty. There
were about 15 employees in the office but none in the lobby. No one was
injured in the crash. |
Sounds of Summer Aug. 25 Sounds of Summer Music and Art Festival will be held Saturday, August 25, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Byhalia. The
event, to be held at the walking track, will include a 5K walk/run and
a kids’ parade. There will be good food, sky lanterns, live music, arts
and crafts, kids’ zone with games and exhibits, a corn hole tournament
and more activities for the entire family. For

Byhalia police respond to 38 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 38 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 3;
miscellaneous, 12; escorts, 8; disturbances, 1; motor vehicle
accidents, 5; fires, 1; medical, 6; harassment, 1; and recovered stolen
vehicle, 1. Byhalia police officers also made six arrests during the past week.

Bolden III is the new principal at Holly Springs Primary School,
replacing retired Joseph Stone. Bolden was elementary school principal
at Robinsonville Elementary School in Tunica County for four years. He
served as assistant principal two years at Dundee Elementary School in
Tunica County and all total has about 10 years experience as an
educator. The principal is from Crenshaw in Quitman County. Shown with
Bolden is Cindy Finch, who works with the gifted students program at
the Holly Springs School District. The new school year for students in
the Holly Springs School District begins this Thursday, Aug. 9. |
