Former MA player named to watch list for place-kickers By KEVIN MALONEY Sports Information Director Northwest The
Watch List for the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award includes 44 Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, Division III, National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Junior
College Athletic Association (NJCAA) collegiate place-kickers nominated
by their colleges for excellence on the football field and in the
community. “These place-kickers are terrific on
the football field and off the field representing their schools, their
football teams, their conferences, their communities, their families
and themselves,” said Chris Kearney, the award’s selection committee
chairman. “We look forward to following their accomplishments during
the next few months.” Northwest Mississippi
Community College rising sophomore Chase Carpenter of Slayden (Marshall
Academy) finds his name on this year’s list, which
includes place-kickers from more than 750 eligible colleges. “It
is a pleasure to include these fine young men on the Watch List for
this award,” Fred Mitchell said. “We are delighted to recognize them
based on outstanding performance in the community and expectations
going into the 2012 college football season. It is also a thrill to see
so many familiar names on the Watch List, including 22 place-kickers
who were finalists for the award last season.” Carpenter
was an All-MACJC Second Team selection a year ago and two-time NJCAA
Special Teams Player of the Week selection. He ranked second on the
team in scoring, with 57 points from four of seven field goals and 45
of 49 extra points. His 45 extra points made and 49 attempted both rank
sixth in a single season at Northwest. Carpenter
scored 33 points in the month of October from three of three FGs and 24
of 25 point-after kicks and had a career-high 12 points in a 66-41 win
over Holmes on homecoming. To learn more about the award visit www.fredmitchellaward.com.
