Morning roundup nets suspects By SUE WATSON A multi-agency force fanned out over Marshall County in the early morning hours Friday and just over 20 arrest warrants were served, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The arrests, in connection with recent grand jury indictments, were mostly for sale or illegal use of drugs such as cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and marijuana, he said.
Changes in place at county schools By BARRY BURLESON Some changes will be waiting when students in the Marshall County School District return to class. Superintendent Jerry Moore, in his first year of leading the district, has altered the grade spans, plus shifted around some personnel and hired a few new administrators. Youth, adults tap social networking By SUE WATSON They are young and they are older and they all say they are still learning how to social network. The Marshall County Extension office and 4-H Club leaders in the state met at the Information Technology Center in Holly Springs recently to improve their skills in the use of networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Linkedin.
Mike Lynn leaves entertainment legacy By SUE WATSON A champion of tourism in Holly Springs and former general manager of the Minnesota Vikings died Saturday, July 21. Mike Lynn III, 76, passed away at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford, following an extended illness at home. Lynn was known best for his tenure as general manager of the Vikings, an NFL team he served for 17 years. Zoning talks dominate county board meeting By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Board of Supervisors is taking a long look at subdivision and zoning ordinances, particularly those requiring developers to finish overlay of subdivision roads and those concerning dissolving of subdivision plats. Several developers are seeking to dissolve their unsuccessful subdivision plats, including John Dailey, who had five lots platted along Chulahoma Road. He appealed to supervisors last week to allow him to dissolve his subdivision because he has sold no lots. Kudzu Bug discovered in two counties The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) has confirmed the first positive identification of the kudzu bug, Megacopta cribraria, in Mississippi after insects were discovered in the past week in Montgomery and Warren counties.
Woman killed in accident Friday night By SUE WATSON A Marshall County woman was killed in a single-vehicle accident Friday night, according to coroner James Richard Anderson. April Smith, 31, of 1631 Taska Road, was driving on Mt. Zion Road when she came out of a curve in the road and lost control of her 2003 Nissan Maxima, he said.
Holly Springs recognized Holly Springs is one of hundreds of attractive towns and neighborhoods that will compete this summer in a national contest to find the “Prettiest Painted Places in America.” The competition, sponsored by the Paint Quality Institute, a leading source of information on paints and coatings, was last conducted in 2000 when towns such as Cape May, N.J., Lake Charles, La., and Telluride, Colo., won top honors. Police arrest seven on felony charges Holly Springs police officers responded to 94 calls last week, according to interim chief Lt. John Norman. Calls were disturbances, 7; alarms, 14; larcenies, 4; accidents, 3; assists to agencies, 5; assaults, 2; funeral escorts, 2; burglaries, 1; auto theft, 1; shots fired, 3; domestics, 4; robbery, 1; and 47 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher answered nine calls. |
