Patriots improve to 21-3 By BARRY BURLESON Back in early December the Marshall Academy varsity boys struggled to beat Oak Hill by six – not the second time around. The Patriots tipped off a 3-0 week with a 70-24 rout of the Raiders January 10 at home. “The first time they caught us just out of football, and we looked like a baby catfish on the hook,” coach Craig Dailey said. “I think they landed a Great White Shark this round.” Byers sweeps Devils By BARRY BURLESON H.W. Holly High drops pair to Olive Branch; splits with Belmont By CLAUDE VINSON At the very start of the Holly High-Olive Branch girls’ game on January 10, both squads appeared a bit on edge and unsteady. The Lady Conquistadors were picking up the Lady Hawks full court. They were forcing them into multiple turnovers. Holly High was not getting many opportunities to establish an offense. All the breaks were going to Olive Branch. While the Lady ’Quistors didn’t score a boat load of points, they were out front 11-2 at the end of the first period. Lady Indians knock off two district opponents By BARRY BURLESON The Byhalia Indians got their first district win of the season January 10 at M.S. Palmer. Coach Todd Hutchinson’s team downed the Dragons 49-44. Behind The Scoreboard Is playoff looming? The second “Game of the Century” was played on Monday night, Jan. 9 (the first played on November 5, 2011), but to many it did little to clear up just who (or which) is number one in the collegiate football world. Lady Lions scratch Lady Kats; boys fall By CLAUDE VINSON The H.W. Byers Lady Lions hit the floor showing their usual form on Friday the 13th against Independence. Eventually the night would prove to be pretty unlucky for the Lady Wildcats (or the Lady Kats as they like to call themselves). Rodeo set for this Saturday The Deep South Championship Rodeo comes to the Marshall County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for the big event, produced by J Bar B Rodeo Company, are adults $8, children $6 and ages 3 and under free. Lady Cardinals rout Lewisburg By BARRY BURLESON Potts Camp teams went one for four last week, as the Lady Cardinals claimed a homecoming night win over Lewisburg. They started the week with a pair of losses at North Pontotoc on Tuesday. ‘This is blessed ground’ Guns and Hoses basketball teams recently presented a check for $970 and a 30-gallon can of nonperishable food to New Hope Village homeless shelter. On hand to receive the check was director of the village, Marilyn Curry, who thanked the Holly Springs firefighters (Hoses) and sheriff’s department and city police department team (Guns) for the benefit.
