 | ‘Raven gets ready for the Olympics’
Raven
Richmond attends the Power Center Academy in Memphis, Tenn., She has a
GPA of 4.0 this year. She swims with the Memphis Splash Team. Raven
competed in the National Black Heritage Championship in Cary, N.C., in
May of this year. She placed second in the 100-yard back stroke, third
in the 50-yard free style and third in the 200-yard free style relay.
Her team placed fifth out of 43 teams. Raven is the granddaughter of
Clifford and Gwen Gipson and Ernest Cunningham. The grandparents said
they are very proud of her and “Go Raven Go.” Her next championship
swim meet is July 15 in Tunica. |

• Tryouts for 2013 season set for this Saturday A
new competitive youth baseball team was formed in Marshall County this
year.
Most
of the Mid-South Storm team members came from Marshall County’s 6-
year-old Dizzy Dean program from the previous year. This team
was
formed to provide a more advanced level of play for some of the best
youth baseball players in Marshall County and the surrounding area,
according to coach Rodney Robinson. Full Story
Tournament this Friday at Kirkwood The annual Rust College Alumni and Friends Celebrity Golf Classic is drawing near but there’s still time for teams to sign up. The tournament will be held at Kirkwood National Golf Club in Holly Springs on Friday, July 13. Full Story

Shawnee
Holbrook, a senior at Whitley County High School in Williamsburg, Ky.,
made history when she became the first player from her school to sign a
college scholarship to play soccer at the collegiate level. She signed
with The University of Cumberlands. She is the daughter of Kevin and
Trina (Curtis) Holbrook of Rockholds, Ky., and the granddaughter of Art
and Dale Galbreath of Mt. Pleasant and the late Butch Curtis of
Lamar..She is the great granddaughter of Corinne Curtis of Little Rock
(formally of Lamar). Holbrook also ran track and played on the
basketball team. |
Boating safety class July 14 The Mississippi
Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will have a boating safety
class on July 14 at the Marshall County Fairgrounds. The class is scheduled from 8 a.m. until this Saturday. Anyone born after June 30, 1980, must have completed a boating safety class in order to operate a boat on public water. To
register, contact the North Region office in Tupelo at 662-840-5172.
