Summer reading program off to good start
“All
About Wishes” was the first book read to about 35 participants in the
summer reading program at the Marshall County Library in Holly Springs.
Librarian Amanda McDonald is excited about the program that is held in
Potts Camp on Tuesdays, Holly Springs on Wednesdays and at the Ruth B.
French Library in Byhalia on Thursdays. Early participation of both
children and parents or chaperones looks good. About 20 children
attended the Potts Camp kickoff. “Wish Upon A Star’ was one activity
children did as an art project. The other was construction of a wish
boat where children can write their wishes on paper and put it in a
boat. Many adult helpers at the first meeting in Holly Springs included
Father Bruce McMillan, Barbara Knecht, Prentis Boatwright, Liz Luttrell
and Jasmine Pegues. |

Galena Middle School band students go to Dixie Band Camp By REGGIE S. DAVIS For
the second year in a row, the Galena Middle School Marching Band was
taken out of their familiar surroundings and placed in a “woodwind” of
musical chairs. The Dixie Band Camp is an annual,
week-long, competitive band music exhibition event sponsored by the
University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. The program accepts
entrants from around the country who apply for the summer camp-styled
stay. Held the third week in June, this year’s camp ran from June 17-22
and had over 900 participants from around the South. Galena Middle
School had significant improvements when compared to last year’s
overall performance scores – a marked achievement considering the
infancy of Galena’s music program. Some students even bested more
seasoned musicians from other states who had been competing for years. Full Story
