Lady Patriots making strides By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots are making good progress during the summer. They went 3-3 last week at the Center Hill Camp. “We’re still young, but we’re getting better,” coach Craig Dailey said. The Marshall girls beat Lewisburg soundly and Independence by seven – two teams they had lost to during an earlier camp. “I thought the girls made great strides last week,” he said. “We showed a lot of improvement.” The other win was over Center Hill #2. The Lady Pats lost to Olive Branch and to SBEC twice. “We played SBEC a lot better the second time,” Dailey said. “We were down one at the half.” Junior Elizabeth Skelton brings lots of experience to Marshall Academy’s starting lineup. “She was extremely solid during the Center Hill Camp,” Coach Dailey said. “I look for her leadership to really show this year.” He said sophomore Wesleyann Ray had some “extremely bright moments and is working on her consistency.” Two
young players, freshman Codie Robertson and eighth grader Blake Martin,
continue to shine. Both got some playing time last year at the varsity
level. “Codie has had a tremendous summer,” he
said, “and looks like a totally different player. She has a shot at
being a special player. “Blake is playing way
beyond her years. Her shot has steadily improved. She and Codie remind
me of some of my combo skill players of the past.” Senior Megan Watkins is a transfer from Potts Camp. “Megan
is going to make a tremendous difference for this young team this
year,” Coach Dailey said. “She is an exceptional athlete and
competitor. She is picking up our system and I look for big things from
her.” Another newcomer, who Dailey said made good
contributions to the team’s progress at camp, is junior Alaken McNeer
(from Potts Camp). The junior high girls went
undefeated during the recent Southaven Camp – beating North Delta,
DeSoto Central, Southaven, Lewisburg and other larger schools. MA
players participating were Robertson, Martin, Hailey McMinn, Erin
Lomenick and Abby Sanders.
