Patriots work to defend crown
By BARRY BURLESON
The Marshall Academy Patriots, back-to-back state champions, are hard at work on the basketball court with high hopes of making it three in a row.
The Pats went 7-1 in the recent Southaven Camp. They beat DeSoto Central, Hickory Flat, Southaven, Independence, Lake Cormorant, SBEC and South Pontotoc. Their only loss, without a starter, was to St. Benedict.
Byers’ Rubin signs with Illinois college
By BARRY BURLESON
Dominique Rubin lives three minutes from H.W. Byers High School. She will go to college eight hours away, in Olney, Ill.
“It will be a new experience with a new set of teammates,” Rubin said. “I’m excited and nervous, too. I’m looking forward to meeting new people.”
Behind The Scoreboard
The bells could be set to toll
The NBA Finals went all knotted on Thursday night. In both games the Heat came out showing no mercy in the first quarters. Miami ran up double-digit leads, using an offensive attack which left OKC completely stymied. The Heat poured it on until the last minute of the third quarter in game one and Oklahoma took a one-point lead. Inexplicably, in the fourth quarter, the Heat seemingly backed off. The Thunder needed no gold-engraved invitation. They quickly swung the pendulum and waltzed away with a hefty margin victory. The Heat didn’t have a break down, it was more of a “wilting away.”
Roundball continues at Byers

Probably before the summer is over, head coach Jason Thompson is going to be referred to as “the Cecil B. DeMille of basketball.”
Thompson hosted another set of summer games last week at the “Lions’ Den” with a total of eight teams coming in. The games ran from Wednesday through Friday.
