ObituariesJane Elizabeth Algee Jane Elizabeth Algee, 88, of Holly Springs, died June 2, 2012. She was the widow of Maynard Algee Sr. and a Christian. Services were held at 1 p.m. on June 4 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Grubb Hill Cemetery in Byhalia. Bro. John Stewart officiated. She leaves two sons, Robert Algee of Ashland, John Algee of Holly Springs; a daughter, Carol Huey of Red Banks; a brother, Albert “Sonny” Stephens of Ft. Joyce Elaine Cook Joyce Elaine Cook, 82, of Laws Hill, died May 26, 2012, at Oxford Baptist Hospital. She was the widow of Vernon S. Cook and a Baptist. Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. She leaves two sons, Jerry Cook, Eddie Cook, both of Holly Springs; a daughter, Shirley E. Cook of Harmontown; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was a member of Payne Chapel AME Church and served faithfully on the usher board for years. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on May 19 at Edgewood Cemetery, Jacksonville, Fla. Bishop Rufus Harris officiated. Q.L. Douglas Funeral Home, Jacksonville, was in charge of arrangements. She leaves two sons, Craig L. Craine of Jacksonville, Eric L. Thompson of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Willie James Harris of Riviera Beach, Fla, Moses Craine; two sisters, Sarah (Rufus) Harris and Alveta Ramsey Frazier; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, George Craine.
Michael Ellis Davis, 56, of Red Banks, died May 31, 2012, at his home. He was a church deacon, Sunday school teacher, a member of the mass choir, a member of the male chorus, a member of the cemetery committee, a church grounds keeper and a disabled construction worker. Services were held at Mt. Newell MB Church in Red Banks, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Thurman Norman officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Claudia Watson Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Chassidi Davis of Victoria, Felicia Davis of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Michael A. Davis of Tucson, Ariz., Rodney Oliver of Holly Springs; a sister, Parthenia Davis-Woodard of Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, James Madison Davis of Red Banks, George Anthony Davis of Friendswood, Tx., Efrem Maurice Davis of Texas City, Tx.; two stepdaughters, Sparkle Manning, Jasmine Manning, both of Las Vegas; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Mariah Davis.
Leydelle “Hank” Henderson Sr., 71, of Cayce, originally from Brookhaven, died May 28, 2012. He retired from American Airlines after nearly 40 years of service. Services were held at noon on June 2 at Prospect CME Church. M.J. Edwards Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Shirley M. Henderson; three daughters, Shelia (Michael) Wolff, Marina Shorter, Laura Giles, all of Memphis, Tenn.; five sons, Leydelle (Tianna) Henderson Jr. of Memphis, Vincent (De’Lisa) Henderson of Huntsville, Ala., Keith (Geree) McBride and Bryant McBride of Memphis, Tenn., and James McBride of Nashville, Tenn. Betty Gail Mason Holmes Betty Gail Mason Holmes, 56, of New Albany, died May 28, 2012, at White County Medical Center in Searcy, Ark. She was an employee of NAPA Auto Parts in New Albany. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Byhalia. Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 1 at the United Funeral Service Chapel. Burial was in Glenfield Memorial Park. Rev. Jim Buchanan officiated. She leaves her husband, Terry Holmes; her daughter, Cara Byrd of New Albany; her son, Shawn Byrd of New Albany; three sisters, Shirley Hale (Bill) of New Albany, Mary Martiney (Tracy) of Little Rock, Ark., Linda Britton (Sam) of Searcy; a brother, Gary Mason (Pamela) of Mountain Home, Ark.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia Sue Mason; and two brothers, William Edward Mason, Elvin Jerome Mason. Knight; two daughters, Heather DeeAnn Moncrief (Travis), Stephanie Renee Knight, both of Coldwater; two sons, Edward Leroy “E.J.” Knight Jr. (Erica), Timothy Daniel Knight, both of Coldwater; her mother, Odessa (Dee) Hawkins of Byhalia; two brothers, Stephen Powell Patrick of Braden, Tenn., Carl Christopher Hawkins of Byhalia; and seven grandchildren. Mary E. McAlvain Mary E. McAlvain, 60, of Olive Branch, died June 2, 2012, at Ashland Health and Rehab. She was the widow of Dan McAlvain, a Methodist and a school teacher with Olive Branch Middle School. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 8, at 2 p.m. at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Terry Parker, 58, of Victoria, died May 28, 2012, at his home. He was disabled. Services were held at 12 noon on June 2 at Newell CME Church in Victoria, where he was a member. Norman Reese Payne, 86, of Holly Springs, died June 2, 2012, at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps, Montford Point Marines, American Legion (life member), Veteran’s Association (life member), and manager of U.S. Postal System in Chicago, Ill. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on June 9, at St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Chicago, where he was a member. Burial will be in Oak Wood Cemetery in Chicago. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He leaves his daughter, Martha Stovall (Dr. A.J. Stovall) of Holly Springs. He was preceded in death by children James Payne, Norma Washington and Margaret Pompey. Sammie Oneta Rogers Sammie Oneta Rogers, 64, of Oxford, died May 31, 2012, at her home. She was a retired quality control employee of Emerson Electric Motor Company and a native of Lafayette County. A private memorial will be held. She leaves her husband, Ricky Rogers; her mother, Margaret Miller of Oxford; four daughters, Ruby Nolan of Batesville, Djuana Peters, Teresa Dean, both of Oxford, Bonnie Figueroa of Potts Camp; two brothers, Howard Miller and Bobby Miller, both of Oxford; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Janie Young White Janie Young White, 89, of Ashland City, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died May 30, 2012, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Ashland City. She was the widow of Lee Olan White and a Baptist. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on June 2 at Hill Crest Cemetery in Holly Springs. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
