An explosion early Monday morning and resulting fire demolished Mike’s Quick Stop in Holly Springs. Later that morning, lightning struck a house on Hernando Road and started a fire. Full Story
Schools receive national honor By SUE WATSON Staff Writer H.W.
Byers, Potts Camp and Holly Springs are in a group of 76 Mississippi
high schools recognized nationally as bronze medal schools in the U.S.
News Best High Schools 2012 rankings. Pass Christian High School ranked nationally as a silver medal school, the only school in the state to do so. Full Story
Moving forward • City’s comprehensive plan takes shape By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Holly Springs Comprehensive Plan is close to ready for approval by the
board of aldermen – likely sometime in June or July, according to Bob
Barber, consultant for the city. He recently met
with a handful of interested public at the Multi-Purpose Building to go
over the plan as it stands now and ask for comment. Barber was
consultant on the last comprehensive plan of the city drawn up in 1997. Full Story
Relay for Life all night Friday in Holly Springs By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The 2012 Marshall County Relay for Life is almost here, set to start Friday at 6 p.m. at Sam Coopwood Park. This
relay is especially meaningful to survivors and caregivers alike, as
its founder, Dr. Gordon Klatt, has been diagnosed with cancer. Full Story
Rubbish site notches forward By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County Board of Supervisors met recently with John Porter to
discuss a proposed Class II rubbish site on the northwestern edge of
the county. Details of the agreements Marshall
County Solid Waste Authority wants to work out with Porter must be

“Friends” install azaleas
Azaleas
are installed on the north wall of the Marshall County Library in Holly
Springs, a gift from Bobby Mitchell, also a member of Friends of the
Library. He donated the azaleas in memory of his late wife, Martha.
Helping with the work are Frances Buchanan, Dorothy Warren and Willie
Brown (kneeling). Richard Williamson, with Shepherd Day Lily Farm,
purchased the shrubs. All that is left is the mulching. Friends of the

Police respond to two robberies Holly Springs police officers answered 111 calls for the week, according to interim chief Lt. John Norman. The
calls included disturbances, 13; alarms, 16; larcenies, 2; accidents,
2; assists to other agencies, 7; domestic, 3; assaults, 3; funeral
escorts, 2; burglaries, 2; 911 hang-ups, 1; auto burglary, 1; checks on
shut-ins, 2; robberies, 2; shots fired, 1; fire, 1; and 53
miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher took 11 calls. Full Story
TV star returns home • Davis speaks to Byers grads By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Television actress Cassi Davis was graduation speaker at H.W. Byers in May. Friends
of the actress and Holly Springs native were instrumental in arranging
for Davis to be the featured speaker, according to Jerry Moore,
superintendent of education for the Marshall County School District. Full Story
MDWFP stresses safe boating During the 2012
Boating Season in Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife,
Fisheries, and Parks enforcement officers will be out patrolling the
waterways to ensure that boaters are in compliance with state and
