Teams take to the diamond
By BARRY BURLESON
The Marshall County Sports Association is in the midst of another great baseball and softball season.
This year’s Dizzy Dean league includes 44 teams, ranging from ages 3 through 18 with approximately 575 participants.
They come from the communities of Byhalia, Holly Springs, Potts Camp, Hickory Flat and beyond.
Hickory Flat joined the league last year with teams in selected ages, then branched out this year with teams in all ages. All age groups fielded enough teams to play within Marshall and Benton counties this season with the exception of the 16- and 18-year-old softball and 18-year-old baseball teams which are participating in other leagues.
“It has been a great season so far for the kids,” league president Janice Wagg said.
Byhalia hosted the preseason tournament in mid-April with “overflow” games being played in Holly Springs.
Holly Springs will host the postseason tournament beginning June 8 with “overflow” games played in Byhalia.
“None of this could happen without the tremendous effort given by volunteer coaches and workers throughout the county,” Wagg said.
