County athletes win medals By BARRY BURLESON Five Marshall County athletes won gold during recent state track competition at Pearl. Others, from Marshall and neighboring Benton, placed in the top eight in various events and earned points for their teams. Tenesha Woods of Potts Camp and Godfrey Fayne of Byhalia placed first in two events. Taking one gold medal each were Megan Watkins and Brantley Harris, both of Potts Camp, and Shandricka Sessom of Byhalia. Class 1A Girls • 100 meter hurdles – third, Elease Williams, Ashland, 18.40. • 400 meter dash – third, Alontra Tucker, Ashland, 1:01.33. • 300 meter hurdles – fifth, Jarvita Elliot, Ashland, 53.93. • 4x400 meter relay – fifth, H.W. Byers, Lanchai Collins, Tearney Jones, Autezia Sellers and Laniqua Collins, 4:41.36. • High jump – third, Laniqua Collins, H.W. Byers, 4-08. • Shot put – seventh, Alisha Jeanes, Ashland, 28-06.50. The Ashland Blue Devils, with 18 points, placed 12th out of 27 schools participating. The H.W. Byers Lady Lady Lions placed 17th with 10 points. Class 1A Boys • 110 meter hurdles – fifth, Larry Davis, Ashland, 17.01. • 300 meter hurdles – fifth, Larry Davis, Ashland, 44.48. • High jump – fifth, Tyrease Williams, Ashland, 5-10. The Ashland Blue Devils, with 12 points, placed 15th out of 23 schools. Class 2A Girls • 100 meter hurdles – seventh, Megan Watkins, Potts Camp, 19.98. • 300 meter hurdles – sixth, Megan Watkins, Potts Camp, 54.44. • Long jump – first, Tenesha Woods, Potts Camp, 16-08. • High jump – second, Tenesha Woods, Potts Camp, 4-10. • Triple jump – first, Tenesha Woods, Potts Camp, 34-10; third, Megan Watkins, Potts Camp, 32-09. • Pole vault – first, Megan Watkins, Potts Camp, 8-00. The Potts Camp Lady Cardinals, with 49 points, placed fifth in the state out of 24 schools competing. Class 2A Boys • 3200 meter run – second, Kris Roberts, Potts Camp, 10:55.94. • 1600 meter run – third, Kris Roberts, Potts Camp, 4:55.19. • Discus – seventh, Kody Joyner, 111-00. • Pole vault – first, Brantley Harris, 11-00. The Potts Camp Cardinals, with 26 points, finished 10th out of 23 schools competing. Class 3A Girls • 4x200 meter relay – sixth, Byhalia, Zakira Norman, Shekenniah Hearn, Latrice Akins, Shandricka Sessom, 1:49.61. • 4x100 meter relay – eighth, Byhalia, Shekenniah Hearn, Latrice Akins, Shandricka Sessom, Jasmine Riddle, 52.08. • High jump – second Shandricka Sessom, Byhalia, 5-04. • Triple jump – fifth, Latrice Akins, Byhalia, 34-01.50. • 100 meter dash – first, Shandricka Sessom, Byhalia, 12.64. The Byhalia Lady Indians, with 26 points, placed 11th out of 25 schools participating. Class 3A Boys • 1600 meter run – first, Godfrey Fayne, Byhalia, 4:35.25. • 300 meter hurdles – fourth, Dehendre Brown, Holly Springs, 43.49. • 800 meter run – first, Godfrey Fayne, Byhalia, 2:01.65. • 4x400 meter relay – second, Byhalia, Andrey Collins, Keenan Jones, Godfrey Fayne, Chris Rayford, 3:31.51; seventh, Holly Springs, Mareceo Hopson, Derrick Vaughn, Gary Tunstall and Dehendre Brown, 3:46.93. • Shotput – second, Jamal Danley, Byhalia, 46-01.25. • Discus – sixth, Anthony Jones, Holly Springs, 110-01; eighth, Calvin James, Holly Springs, 98-05. The Indians, with 36 points, placed eighth out of 32 teams. The Hawks, with 11 points, finished 18th. |
