Cardinals end spring practice with victories By BARRY BURLESON Editor The
Potts Camp football program itself is still young, but coach Shane
Stone will have experience on his side when a new season arrives. “The
experienced players we have coming back make things a lot easier than
past years,” said Stone, who started football from scratch at the
school in 2009. The Cardinals concluded their
spring practice with a 28-0 win over Biggersville and a 12-6 victory
over Falkner Thursday night in a jamboree at Falkner. Each game last
two quarters. Twenty-five players return from
last season’s team that finished 7-4. With upcoming freshmen, Potts
Camp dressed 36 for the jamboree. He said
quarterback Ben Bolden sat out spring football practice due to an arm
problem. Jordon Harris moved to the field general position. “We want to get Ben healthy, and Jordon took over like he’d been doing it all his life,” Stone said. Jordon Harris scored three touchdowns in the win over Biggersville. Jamarquis Foster tallied the other. Foster
added another TD in the victory over Falkner. Then Jordon Harris threw
to his brother, Brantley Harris, for the game-winning score on the last
play of the game. He said defensively, in the jamboree, his Cardinals looked good at times and tired at times. “We stayed with our base defense and just played football – not a lot of blitzing or disguising coverages,” Stone said. Even with the experience on his side, the head coach said time was still spent on fundamentals during spring drills. “We teach fundamentals every day,” he said. It
will be a special season in Potts Camp in 2012. The Cardinals, road
warriors the past three seasons, will play football for the first time
in their new stadium on campus. They will host Marshall County rival
H.W. Byers in their season opener August 17. “That will be a big night,” Coach Stone said. Mike
Bush and Lee Gray will return as assistant football coaches for the
Cardinals. Stone said two other coaches will also be joining the staff
– Markeith Washington, former head coach at Byhalia who will also be
an administrator at Potts Camp, and Andrew Aldridge, who is coming from
Mantachie and will also be the new head baseball coach for the
Cardinals.
