MA-Centreville meet this week for state championship
By BARRY BURLESON
Marshall Academy will be seeking the school’s first ever state championship in baseball this week.
In addition to this year, North State crowns came in 1982, 1990-92 and 2007.
The Patriots (19-15) play Centreville Academy (25-5) in a best two-of-three series. Game one of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AA showdown was played Tuesday night in south Mississippi. Game two starts at 5 p.m. Friday at Patriot Field in Holly Springs. Game three will follow Friday night, if needed.
The Tigers, defending state champs, are led by left-handed ace Hunter Devall (an LSU signee), right-handed pitcher Cliff Hurst and lots more talent.
“They’re an extremely talented team – offensively, defensively and pitching – and a very seasoned team,” said Bart Jenkins, head coach of the Patriots.
“It is time for us to put it all together. This team has faced a lot of challenges this season. We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot; we must make the routine plays; we can’t leave runners on base.”
Jenkins thanked the MA fans for their strong support to this point. He hopes the backing gets even better this week.
“I have always been awestruck by the amount of support at Marshall Academy,” he said. “The entire Marshall Academy family gets credit for this team’s success. And this week we need maximum effort from everyone.”
