Recipes from Martha Ruth Leonard
Sweet Fruit Slaw
1 medium head green cabbage, shredded (about 2 lbs.)
1 cup diced red apple
large bowl, combine cabbage, raisins, pineapple and apple. In small
bowl, mix mayonnaise and sugar until well blended. Pour over cabbage
mixture and toss lightly to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate at least
two hours. 8 servings.
Mexican Chef Salad
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 cup rinsed and drained kidney beans
In 10-inch skillet, brown ground beef with onion, chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Drain. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. In large bowl, combine romaine, beans, cheese, onion and olives. Add 3/4 of the ground beef mixture and toss lightly to mix evenly. Drizzle with salad dressing. Garnish with chips, tomatoes and remaining ground beef mixture. 6 servings.

Two from Byhalia going to state track meet
Two students at Byhalia qualified for the state track meet during the North Half meet held in Oxford over the weekend. April West, coached by Charles Cummings, qualified in the girls’ shot put. Travis Malone, coached by Coach Gillesie and Coach Wheeler, will be competing in the boys’ long jump. Malone qualified with a jump of 21’9” at North Half.
The Rev. Dr. R.J. Wilson, pastor of Mt. Moriah MB Church on Marianna Road, will receive his master’s degree in theology from Jacksonville Theological Seminary. Commencement exercises will be held at Olivet Fellowship Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn. on May 18.

Toney for governor - long shot on short budget
A Byhalia man is running for governor -- he’s been on the road running for a year and a half. H.R. Toney, former TV repairman and retired Navy chief petty officer, held a press conference in Holly Springs to announce his candidacy.
One year ago - Sheriff Bell killed doing his duty
Thursday, May 7, marks the first anniversary of the shooting death of Marshall County Sheriff Osborne Bell. Sheriff Bell was fatally shot by Bart Mease during an attempted arrest on drug charges.
50 Years Ago - May 10, 1962
Jeanne Miller, David Rather, Betty McClatchy, Charles Corey, Marie Rather, Walker Swaney, Barbara Evans, Mahon Jones Jr., Vickie Buchanan, C.B. McClatchy and Scott Robinson attended a dance given for Marjorie Anderson by her parents at the Corinth Country Club Friday night.
