Cunningham signs with Blue Mountain
By BARRY BURLESON
Her high school coach saw steady improvement. Her soon-to-be college coach sees plenty of potential.
Lane Cunningham, a 6-foot senior at Marshall Academy, signed a basketball scholarship with Blue Mountain College Friday morning in the MA library.
“Lane really improved a lot – particularly defensively,” said Craig Dailey, head coach at Marshall. “And, of course, you can’t teach height and heart, and she has both.”
Lavon Driskell, head women’s basketball coach at Blue Mountain, said he believes Cunningham’s best basketball is in front of her.
“We think she can be an impact player in our conference,” Driskell said. “We’ve been looking for a post player with her size.”
In her senior season for the Lady Patriots, she averaged eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks per game.
Driskell said he did not get to watch Cunningham play during the 2011-12 season, but he had great interest in her, and after watching DVDs of some games, she was invited for a tryout.
“We were impressed with what she did in our tryout,” he said. “We’ve had our eye on Lane for some time, and we were hoping she would pan out like we wanted, and she did.”
Family members, teammates and classmates were on hand for the signing ceremony.
