Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce team up to support Teach for America The Holly Springs Rotary Club and the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce will host a reception on May 3 to honor the teachers of the Teach For America program, also known as corps members, who teach in local schools. Teach For America has served as a source of effective teachers for Mississippi schools since 1993. Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates and professionals who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. This year, 22 Teach For America corps members teach in Holly Springs and Marshall County public schools. Three of those corps members are in their second year of teaching and, although they will have completed their Teach For America corps experience, will continue teaching in the same schools next year. “We’re grateful for the generous support of the Holly Springs Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce,” said Katie Rarick, managing director of Growth Strategy and Development for Teach For America. “Their partnership enables our teachers to give their students the high-quality education they deserve.” The Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club are partnering to raise funds for recruitment, training and ongoing support of additional Teach For America corps members in Holly Springs and Marshall County next year. So far Rotary has committed at least $1,000 to the cause and is looking for additional donations. “We are happy to partner with Rotary to celebrate this generous donation,” said Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce director Rebecca Bourgeois. “We are keenly interested in the quality of education in our community.” As part of a grant-matching program, if additional donors add to the Rotary’s initial grant and the total gift amount reaches $5,000, it will become eligible to be doubled to $10,000. If community members would like to add to this fund, go online to “http://teachforamerica.fundly.com/hollysprings,” call the chamber at 662.252.2943, or contact Rarick at 662.832.6566 or katie.rarick@teachforamerica.org. |
