News BriefsPortion of Highway 78 to be named for Minor Longtime
Marshall County favorite, the late William “Bill” Minor, will be
memorialized with a segment of Highway 78 named for the former
transportation commissioner. The state
Legislature approved House and Senate measures, paving the way for
designation of Highway 78 through Marshall County as the Bill Minor
Memorial Highway. Gov. Phil Bryant has also agreed to sign the bills, which should take effect July 1. Mike Tagert, highway commissioner for the Northern District, said honoring Minor’s memory is a good thing. “Bill
Minor was a good man,” he said. “It is only fitting that a section of
U.S. 78 be named in his honor. He served as a catalyst for many
important developments in Mississippi’s highway system, both as a key
legislator in the passage of the 1987 four-lane highway program and as
a commissioner pushing for the development of highways for the Northern
District.” Minor served 20 years as the senator
from Marshall, Benton and DeSoto counties before winning the Northern
District commissioner’s race in 2003. He held the position until his
untimely death in November 2010. Minor lived in Marshall County. Graduation edition scheduled May 17 The South Reporter announces its annual Graduation Edition, which will be published on Thursday, May 17. The
