Fire levels home in Waterford

Six members of a family in Waterford and their cat are safe after an early morning fire Wednesday, April 18, wiped out their home.

Kenneth and Kandye Barkhurst, of 37 Bethlehem Road in Waterford, and four children escaped the home after detecting smoke upon arising to go to work.

“We woke up running late right before 6 a.m. and noticed smoke in the middle room of the house,” Kenneth Barkhurst said. “We opened a closet and smoke poured out and the attic was full of smoke.”

Suspects arrested in shooting incident

Staff Writer

Marshall County investigators made two arrests in connection with a disturbance in the 3500 block of Bethlehem Road Sunday, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

A call was made to 911 around 10:15 p.m., but when officers arrived suspects had left the scene. Shortly after deputies left, 911 received a call reporting gunshots at the house at the same address.

The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen and mayor are back to square one in filling the police chief spot.

The vacancy came up with the firing of chief James Dean just prior to completing his first three months on the job.

Holly High program makes a difference

The Road to Success program at Holly Springs High School continues to make a difference in the lives of young people. Graduates of the school and community leaders from far and near give their time to talk with high school students about their professions and what it takes to be successful.

Planning underway for Civil Rights Museum

Two museums, approved for funding in the 2010-2011 session of the Mississippi Legislature, are being discussed around the state.

Angela Stewart with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History is touring the state on behalf of the new Civil Rights Museum that will be built in Jackson on North Street next to the Winter Archives Building.

County discusses Code Red system

By SUE WATSON
Staff Writer

Supervisor Charles Terry and emergency management coordinator Hugh Hollowell recently presented options to the county board for signing on with an emergency notification system.

The system would be cheaper and spread emergency information such as storm warnings or chemical hazard spills more widely and quickly than a siren system, they said.

Five lanes

Paving crews make quick work of laying asphalt last week on a street-widening project on Highway 7 South (Craft Street) in Holly Springs. The stretch went from three to five lanes in the business district near Highway 78. The next step will be activation of new lights at the intersection of J.M. Ash Drive and Craft Street.

Byhalia officers respond to 37 calls

The Byhalia Police Department responded to 37 calls during the past week,

Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2; miscellaneous, 10; escorts, 9; disturbances, 3; domestic, 2; assists, 3; motor vehicle accidents, 4; medical, 4.

Byhalia police officers also made five arrests during the past week.

Police go to 104 calls

Officers with the Holly Springs Police Department answered 104 calls last week, according to interim chief Lt. John Norman.

The Holly Springs Rotary Club and the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce will host a reception on May 3 to honor the teachers of the Teach For America program, also known as corps members, who teach in local schools.

Big snake tries to go to school

Marshall Academy had an unexpected visitor recently, but thank goodness the big rat snake did not quite make it inside the building. It is pictured resting on a windowsill outside the school office. Employee Gail Hoyt tried to close the window from the inside and when it would not shut completely, she was shocked to see the snake. It was taken to the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center property and released.
