Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones “0-16” in a weekend I
have a new great-great-niece! Evangeline Ailey was born Friday. She’s
the first granddaughter for my niece Sister (Dawn) and the excitement
has been palpable! My great-nephew Blake and
Sarah have been expecting Evy for the required nine months. It’s flown
by for me. Not for Sister or Sarah though. Sister’s suffered almost as
much as Sarah. Evy weighed seven pounds, 11
ounces and was 20 inches long. She has dark hair and great big eyes and
is quite stunning! She and older sister Shaelin are going to cause
Daddy Blake to have ulcers when they hit their teens. Spring
is a good time for baby girls to arrive. Oldest granddaughter Meredith
arrived April 23, 16 years ago. Pop and I celebrated our 22nd
anniversary the 24th of April that year. When Meredith hits 16 on the
23rd of this year, Pop and I will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary
the day after. It doesn’t seem like 16 years
since our first granddaughter was born. Uncle Kris was terrified of
her. We had to force him to hold her. Now, he hides from her and her
little sister! Twenty-one days after Mere got
here, Emily arrived. Sister and Dana somehow timed it so the two
cousins would be as close in age as possible. They
were so much fun when they were little. We (I) made them matching
outfits all the time and especially at Christmas -- we’d go all out
with the glitz and glam. Remy arrived a couple years after Mere and Em -- and a couple days after Em’s birthday in May. We had three baby dolls for a while and they were so much fun. Sarah,
Blake and Sister need to enjoy Evy and Shaelin while they can. In
roughly two years the girls will be 16 going on 45 and life as the
grown-ups know it will be over. I’m no longer
allowed to comment on many things with Mere and Remy in this column.
I’m fairly sure I’m going to get in trouble with this brief mention.
But... When Mere and Remy came home from the
hospital it was just about the most wonderful thing ever. And I was
(am) so lucky. Dana still lives across the driveway with the girls and
I see them nearly every day. Many grandparents don’t get that chance. I’m
so glad that Sister was able to be in Nashville the weekend that Evy
was born and could spend a few days with Evy and Shaelin (and of course
their parents) before coming home to Mississippi. Being a grandmother is wonderful. And Sister’s going to be as good at it as I am!
