Lions hit the road, drop two of three By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The H.W. Byers Lions took the bus last week and made a turn around the district encountering a trio of foes. They
stopped first at West Union and dropped a close one in seven innings.
Chance Lykens went the distance for the Lions and took the loss on the
hill. The winning pitcher for the Urchins was Drew Garrett. The Lions loaded the bases a couple of times but couldn’t get the runners to the plate. According
to head coach Bo Sellers, his Lions collected about 10 hits against
West Union. Chris Echols banged a round-tripper with Justin Sellers on
base. The homer and RBI accounted for Byers’ score total in the 3-2
loss. Byers At Coldwater The Lions played the Coldwater Cougars on April 10. The Lions got past the Cougars with a score of 11-7. Coach
Sellers used a trio of hurlers, starting with Courtney Fitzpatrick,
relieving with Kyle Skelton and finishing with Justin Sellers. The
Lions’ batter banged out seven hits. Chris Echols smashed a grand slam
homer with Sellers, Jankel Scott and Tre Stephens on. Coach Sellers said the Lion batters hit well, however, they were awarded a few walks by the Coldwater pitchers. Fitzpatrick was credited with the win and Sellers got the save. Byers at Myrtle The
Lions ended their road trip with a six-inning loss at the home diamond
of the Myrtle Hawks. Fitzpatrick took the loss from the mound for
Byers. The lone score for the Lions came from Stephens. The final score
was 11-1. Byers has one home game left, Tuesday
of this week versus the Ingomar Falcons. The last game listed on their
schedule is with Ashland and will not be played. The two road losses will deny the Lions a postseason playoff berth.
