City board fires police chief By SUE WATSON Staff Writer James Dean was let go by the Holly Springs Board of Aldermen after only three months as head of law enforcement in the city. Chief
Dean was voted out 5-0 following a show of the police force at an
approved meeting with the mayor and board of aldermen in executive
session Tuesday, April 3. Thirteen uniformed officers, who were ranked
no higher than sergeant, filled the board room for an appearance to air

The 74th Pilgrimage Tour of Homes will take place in historic Holly Springs this weekend, April 13-15. Set
in the Antebellum Capital of the Mid-South, the tour features selected
antebellum homes hosted by costumed guides, local storytellers, organ
recitals in the town’s historic churches, horse-drawn carriage rides,
Civil War re-enactors, luncheons, a character-guided cemetery tour,
arts and crafts and a Southern supper in the antebellum Montrose

Manhunt called off in county By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
six-hour pursuit of a man wanted on an arrest warrant for burglary was
suspended after the suspect fled into woods and could not be found,
according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Full Story
Charter school legislation tops talks By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Local
interest ran high on some state legislative bills at a recent board of
supervisor meeting, following updates by Gary Anderson, county
consultant to the Legislature in Jackson. Anderson reported that
District 13 Rep. Steve Massengill, on the House Education Committee
with Rep. Eugene Hamilton from DeSoto County and Rep. Pat Nelson from
Southaven, was in the eye of the storm as the House committee had to
take a vote on SB 2401 – the charter school bill. The House Committee
rejected the bill by a vote of 16-15 Tuesday, April 3. That means the
bill is dead unless Gov. Phil Bryant seeks to remedy the language in
the bill to make it palatable to House members by calling a special

Groups seek more listings for WIN Center By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
long-term success of the Marshall-Benton Area WIN Job Center in Holly
Springs depends on employers to list their jobs with the Holly Springs
office, said Clencie Cotton, with the Rust College Community
Development Corporation. Cotton presented details
of a non-financial agreement with the Mississippi Department of
Employment Security and RCCDC to the Marshall County Board of
Supervisors. The agreement includes shared responsibilities to improve
workforce training opportunities and workforce services to residents of

Byhalia police go to 38 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 38 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2;
miscellaneous, 15; escorts, 4; juvenile-related calls, 2; disturbances,
1; assists, 2; motor vehicle accidents, 2; fires, 1; medical, 8; and
trespassing, 1. Byhalia police officers made four arrests during the past week.
Chamber event spreads optimism By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Attendance at the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce quarterly luncheon included a membership that is inspired to higher ground. The
chamber’s goal for 2012 is to improve communications with partners and
members. To that end, the chamber will announce soon the launching of a
website, according to executive director Rebecca Bourgeois. Dream
Design Studios in Hernando is putting together the website. Full Story
