Last year, due to a conflict, I did not get to participate in the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association Spring Convention at Ole Miss.
It was my first time to miss in a while. I thought organizer Beth Fitts might write me off.

Pages of the past...
I love doing the Pages of the Past. I like reading the “50 Years Ago,” the best. I can really get carried away following some of the stories.
One in particular that went on for several weeks was about a “Negro” who was buried in a collapse of some sort in Waterford. I can’t remember what happened or why, but the entire community, black and white, turned out and worked very hard to rescue him. People and rescue crews came from miles around. There were pictures of the rescue workers standing on the mounds of dirt.

Getting ready for Pilgrimage weekend
“Getting ready for the Pilgrimage.” It is a phrase that is heard often in Holly Springs about this time each year. The arrival of the Pilgrimage each April is heralded by a flurry of carpentry work, painting, yard care, and general sprucing up. It provides both a deadline which must be met and a goal for which to strive. The most inert of the town’s work force can be stirred by the words, “But it must be ready in time for Pilgrimage.” Even projects that are not directly related to this event are spurred along by the fervor of it all. I suppose it has been so with people since the days of Chaucer.
If freedom isn’t vigorously defended, it will be lost
Some readers may recall a series of articles I wrote four years ago about the mother of a small toddler who was jailed by the EPA for wetlands violations.
Letters To The Editor
We, the board and members of the Slayden, Mt. Pleasant, and Early Grove Volunteer Fire Department are asking everyone who is interested in discussing ways we can come together as a community in an attempt to obtain a satellite station in Slayden, and lower the rating in this area. At the present time, we have a 10-C rating which causes higher homeowner insurance premiums, and it makes it difficult to qualify for homeowner insurance if you don’t already have an existing policy.
