Man dies in Monday shooting By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A man believed to be from Arkansas died Monday following a shooting on Rabbit Ridge Road, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The
road was blocked off to the Red Banks Road intersection while the
sheriff department’s investigation continued from about 7 p.m. to
around midnight in the 1300 block of Rabbit Ridge Road. Full Story

Massey’s sixth grade class at Marshall Academy joined the Mississippi
Forestry Commission and Holly Springs Garden Club this year for an
Arbor Day celebration at Montrose. Two trees were planted in honor and memory of the late Bobby Tubbs and the late Bill York. Sgt.
James Hamblin with the Mississippi Guard, Detachment 1, Company A of
the 2-198th Infantry, presented the colors, words of patriotism, and
one of 11 American flags flown over Q West Army Base in Iraq in one day
– one of two he brought back home from his tour. Full Story
Litter problem outrages citizens By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
number of citizens, who want the city of Holly Springs to welcome
visitors with clean streets and gutters, discussed litter problems with
Mayor Andre’ DeBerry at a recent meeting of the city board. Jane
Hubbard, spokeswoman for the group, asked city leaders for action to
clean up litter and to fine those who throw out litter to try to
encourage people to discard trash properly. Full Story

Gunn coming back to MA By BARRY BURLESON Editor Tommy Gunn believes the third time is definitely the charm. He
will return to Marshall Academy June 1 for a third stint as the
school’s headmaster. He will replace Jane Hubbard, the person who
replaced him six years ago. Hubbard announced her resignation in early

Marshall County man returned after being lost By SUE WATSON Staff Writer William
Lawrence of the Laws Hill community was returned from Fulton County,
Georgia, by sheriff’s investigators after he went missing for a day
from the St. Francis Hospital campus in Memphis, Tenn., according to

Several senators oppose SB 2380, ‘spoils system’ By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Sixteen
Democratic senators have signed a statement in opposition to Senate
Bill 2380 that would return the state to the spoils system. One of

Byhalia police go to 28 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 28 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 4;
miscellaneous, 10; escorts, 3; juvenile-related calls, 3; domestic
disturbances, 1; assists, 1; fires, 3; and medical calls 3. Byhalia police officers made eight arrests during the past week.
Police go to 105 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 105 calls last week and made one felony arrest, according to chief James Dean. Calls
included – disturbances, 12; alarms, 10; larcenies, 1; accidents, 4;
agency assists, 4; domestic, 5; assaults, 2; burglaries, 4; funerals,
2; stolen vehicles, 2; welfare check, 1; malicious mischief, 1; 911
hang-up, 1; run-away, 1; robbery, 1; and 54 miscellaneous arrests. The

Redbuds provide refreshing sight By MARY MINOR Contributing Writer The
ribbon cutting on the last segment opening Highway 78 from the Alabama
State Line to the Tennessee State Line was Saturday, Aug. 6, 1994. Zack Stewart was the Northern District highway commissioner and served in that capacity for 20 years (1984-2004). Following
the completion of the highway, Stewart was on a trip to Starkville for
a meeting and as he traveled on Highway 82, he noticed the beautiful
redbud trees in bloom along the highway between Starkville and Mayhew
