Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Waiting on baby Evy Sister (my niece Dawn) and I drove to Nashville Sunday for a baby shower. I’m
mostly recovered from the tumble off the ladder -- except for coughing
constantly with the “crud” that everyone has, which makes my bruised
ribs really ache. My great-nephew Blake, 25, and his Sarah are expecting their first baby really soon. Hence the baby shower. It’s a beautiful drive to Nashville, although one thing on the route is driving me crazy. Usually,
we’re making a flying trip -- there and back in one day. But there’s a
sign on I-40 that says “Granny B’s Quilt Shop.” I want to go there! I
also want to stop at Lobelville, where there is an Amish community and
they have the most wonderful store and most of the homes have
vegetables or baskets or homemade jellies, jams, etc. or quilts and
things. I love to go there! Watching Sister
waiting to become a grandmother is fun (and funny). She’s learned to
crochet and after a start with some fat yarn that wasn’t working, she
bought some skinnier yarn and within a week had crocheted Evangeline
(Evy) a beautiful little blanket. I’m sure
everyone will be surprised that I’m making Evy a quilt. For a long
time, I thought the Sunbonnet Sue pattern was past its time and I just
didn’t like “her.” Then, one day, I looked at a friend’s quilt -- Sunbonnet Sue -- and I had the stray thought that it was cute. Next thing I knew, I was in love with “Sue” -- the one I’m making for Evy is the second one I’ve made. I’ve
never given anyone a finished quilt when it was supposed to be given
(Christmas, birthday, etc.). It’s almost always a pretty gift bag with
pieces of blocks and fabric so the quilt recipient at least has a clue
what it will look like. Sunday at the shower, I
had two unfinished quilts! Evy’s is still just blocks and some of those
aren’t finished yet. Evy’s big sister Shaelin is getting a Hello Kitty
quilt -- at least the top and backing are done. It only needs to be
quilted. And Shaelin wants it soon! Shaelin, who
is 5, and I are going to be great friends! She loves sparkly red
“Dorothy” shoes and Hello Kitty. Those are two of my favorite things
also! One of the best parts of the shower was the food! There were two new (to me) appetizers there! I can hardly wait for our next lunch here at the office so I can bring them! It’s really hard to find a “new” recipe nowadays. And, to make it even better, both of the recipes are hot and spicy! Yummy!
