Cardinals beat Walnut in first district contest
By BARRY BURLESON
The Potts Camp baseball team started Region 2-2A play Tuesday of last week with a big road win.
The Cardinals, led by the pitching and hitting of Jesse Shaw, downed Walnut 10-4.
“It feels good to get that first division win,” coach Justin Weeden said.
From the mound, Shaw recorded five strikeouts, and from the batter’s box, he had two hits, one being a double.
Sawyer Goode and Justin Holmes each had a double for Potts Camp.
Zack Mayer reached base three out of his four times at bat and scored all three times. He also had two stolen bases.
Coach Weeden liked the defensive play of his catcher.
“Kody Joyner played great behind the plate,” he said. “He threw out his fifth runner on the season trying to steal.”
A second district game last week proved to be a tough loss for the Cardinals. They fell 1-0 at home Friday to Bruce.
Potts Camp pitcher Ben Bolden struck out 11, walked none and gave up just five hits in the loss.
“He pitched great,” Coach Weeden said. “I’m really proud of the way Ben pitched. I can’t ask for much more.”
Meanwhile, Potts Camp could get only four hits off the Trojans.
“We loaded the bases twice but just couldn’t come up with a big hit when we needed it,” he said.
The Cardinals (5-2) were slated to host Calhoun City on Tuesday of this week. They host Benton County rival Hickory Flat Friday at 5 p.m. and then go to Pine Grove Saturday for a 12 noon contest.
