Obituaries
Alverna Jimmerson Crawford, 89, of Lamar, died March 14, 2012, at Methodist Hospital-North in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Jessie Crawford. She was a member of the church mother’s board, former choir member and usher, Greenwood Chapter 58-A Order of Eastern Star and retired cook with UCAC Headstart Program (2001). Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 19 at Samuel Chapel MB Church in Ashland, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joseph Davis officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves six daughters, Emma Jean Williams, Jimmie Jessie Crawford, Maxine Nunnally, Devora Moore, Sarah Johnson, Patricia Cowan, all of Memphis; three sons, Clyde Crawford, Frank Crawford, both of Memphis, minister Ray Crawford of Olive Branch; 25 grandchildren 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Coopwood and Laura Watkins.
Melvin Q. Gresham, 89, of Ashland, died March 16, 2012, at his home. He was the widower of Norma Akin Gresham. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a deacon and lifelong member of Ashland Baptist Church. Services were held at 3 p.m. on March 18 at Ashland Baptist Church. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. Bro. Randy Smith and Dr. Gerald Hodges officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves a son, Glenn Gresham (Sandra) of Ashland; four daughters, Juanita Childers (Stanley) of Ashland, Linda Gambrell (Harold) of Tupelo; Shelia Smith (Randy) of Ripley, Penny Poff (Stanley) of Ashland; two brothers, S.B. “Tubby” Gresham of Holly Springs, Edward Gresham of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Dorothy Bishop of Memphis; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Heckmann, 67, of Holly Springs, died March 16, 2012, at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. She was a Christian and manager of Fin’s Bar and Grill. Memorial services, conducted by family, will be held at 1 p.m. on March 25 at Fin’s Bar and Grill. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She leaves a son, William Sharp IV of Holly Springs; two brothers, Larry Turnipseed of Arlington, Sidney Turnipseed of Collierville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Krystal Sharp, William Shary; and a great-grandchild, Bailey Vanelli.
Charles Raleigh Heflin Jr., 47, died March 10, 2012. Memorial services were held at 12 noon on March 17 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. at Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery in Millington, Tenn. Bro. Dean Wallace officiated. He leaves his children, Raleigh Heflin (Kansas) of Southaven, Zachary Booth of San Diego, Calif., Samantha Booth of Southaven; stepmother, Beverly Heflin of Drummonds, Tenn.; stepfather, Ray Beasley of Hickory Flat; siblings David Heflin (Peggy) of Covington, Tenn., Christopher Heflin (Nikki) of Atoka, Tenn., Amanda Hill (Rick) of Olive Branch; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Dale Heflin (Bobby). Pallbearers were Billy Hughey, Zac Cowan, Chance Griner, Zachary Hensley, Steven Smith and Michael Moses.
Cherita Denise Williams Jeffries, 52, of Red Banks, died March 13, 2012, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. She was the widow of Herman Lee Jeffries. She was a member of her church choir, a member of the stewardess board and a member of the pastor’s aide committee. Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 18 at Pleasant Hill CME Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Willie Hoey officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves three children, Cherodrick Jeffries of Holly Springs, Reggie Jeffries, Chenisha Jeffries, both of Mt. Pleasant; her mother, Bernice Chalmers Chairs; and two grandchildren.
Frank Johnson Jr., 85, of Ashland, died March 8, 2012, at Ashland Health and Rehab in Ashland. A retired laborer for Holly Springs Brick and Tile, he was a World War II Army veteran. Services were held at 10:30 a.m., March 17 at Greenwood MB Church in Lamar, where he was a member. Rev. Gerald Thompson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Ruby Lee Bean Johnson of Ashland; three daughters, Casynette Hoyle of Michigan City, Deborah Flemming of Holly Springs, Jennifer Brown of Lamar; nine sons, Freddie B. Johnson, Trence Johnson, Larry Johnson, Dwight Johnson, all of Ashland, Frank Howard Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., Ellis Johnson, Rickey Johnson, Casey Powell, Sylvester Mark Johnson, all of Holly Springs; two sisters, Thelma Thompson of Ashland, Myrtle Johnson of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Charlie Johnson of Chicago, Ill.; 26 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Betty Jean Lucas, 56, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Red Banks, died March 16, 2012, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She was a former employee of Johnson Cleaning Company. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on March 24 at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. S.A. Phillips will officiate. J.F. She leaves a son, Rodney Lucas (Pam) of Memphis; two sisters, Debbie Jordan of Portage, Ind., Cathy Jordan of Memphis; two brothers, Gregory Jordan, Leroy Jordan Jr., both of Gary, Ind.; and a granddaughter.
Beverly Pasco, 64, died March 10, 2012. She was the widow of Roy Pasco, her husband of 43 years. Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 14. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves four sons, Tony, Randy, Bobby and Jason Pasco; two daughters, Cathy Barber, Melody Roberts; a brother, Greg Session; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Roy Jr.; a grandson, Greg Pasco; and brother, Larry Session.
Riella King Pegues, 69, of Holly Springs, died March 14, 2012, at Alliance HealthCare System. She was the widow of J.C. Pegues. She was a caregiver in private homes. Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Father Leonard officiated. J.F. She leaves two sons, Kenneth Pegues of Holly Springs, Fredrick Pegues of Olive Branch; two daughters, Cassandra Ellis of Memphis, Tenn., CaJewel Pegues of Olive Branch; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Sylvester Pegues. Robert Dale Rhea Robert Dale Rhea, 49, of Myrtle, died March 16, 2012, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was the widower of Cynthia Rene Mormon Rhea. He was a member of Keownville Baptist Church and a construction worker. Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 19 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cornersville Cemetery. Bro. Jerry Bishop officiated. He leaves his father, Don Rhea of Potts Camp; a son, Brandon Joseph Rhea of Myrtle; a daughter, Amanda Dawn Rhea of Myrtle; a brother, Ricky Rhea of Cornersville; a sister, Tommie Easley of New Albany. Paulette Whaley, 59, died Feb. 29, 2012. She was employed with Universal Life Insurance Company for more than 20 years. Services were held at 11 a.m. on March 7 at Union Valley Baptist Church. Pastor Rev. Herbert Kneeland officiated. Burial was in New Park Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn. M.J. Edwards Funeral Home in Memphis was in charge of arrangements. She leaves a son, Cameron D. Watson; one grandson, Cameron D. Watson Jr.; and many other family members. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie James Whaley Sr., Rudy Whaley Sr., and a sister, Mildred Taylor. Pallbearers were Willie James Whaley Jr., Terrence LaShawn Whaley, Rudy Whaley Jr., Matthew Jamal Boyce, Christian Whaley and Marcus Bowen.
Joe F. Williams, 84, of McKenzie, Tenn., died March 17 at Jackson-Madison County Hospital. He earned a football scholarship to the University of Kentucky, where he roomed with teammate George Blanda. He entered the U.S. Navy in December, 1946. He was a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent at Holly Springs Schools from 1951 to 1969. He retired from the McKenzie School System in 1995. He was active in civic and education organizations. Services were held at 11 a.m., March 20, at First United Methodist Church in McKenzie. Brummitt Funeral Home of McKenzie was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Elaine Seale Williams; a son, Joe Jr., (Kathy) Williams of Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Mary Elaine Brown of McKenzie, Laura Lei Williams of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Mary Margaret Joyce of Milan, Tenn.; four grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. Victoria Mae and Jeremiah DeWayne Wright Victoria Mae and Jeremiah DeWayne Wright, infant twins, died March 9, 2012. Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. on March 15 at Forest Hill South Cemetery. They leave their parents, Elizabeth Harris of Byhalia and Melvin Wright of Olive Branch. |
